Haruki Murakame's Killing Commendatore. The people and locations in this book stuck with me from since a previous read through (where for some reason I got sidetracked and never finished it) In the three or so years since, certain situations or thoughts would conjure the pit & shrine, Tomohiko's mountain house or Menshiki's mansion up clear as a place I'd once visited in real life, so naturally I was immersed doubly this time round.

Loved this guy's books since I was given Wind Up Bird Chronicle around 2010 and recently reread Kafka on the Shore aswell, which used to be my 2nd favorite after IQ84, but I reckon Commendatore has nudged it into 3rd place.

And recently found out his new novel, The City And Its Uncertain Walls, has been released in Japan! Wonder how long we'll have to wait for a translation..

I finally picked up Kafka on the Shore. About a third of the way through and so so very enjoyable.

is music actually rotted one note?

No, music is not "rotted one note." Music is a complex art form that involves the combination of multiple notes, rhythms, melodies, harmonies, and other elements. Different musical traditions and genres have their own unique systems and structures for organizing and creating music.

In Western music, the most common system is the equal-tempered scale, which divides the octave into 12 equally spaced pitches. This system allows for a wide range of harmonic possibilities and enables composers and musicians to create diverse and expressive music.

While it is true that certain minimalist or experimental compositions may focus on repetitive patterns or emphasize a single note or pitch, they are just one aspect of the vast spectrum of musical possibilities. Music is a rich and multifaceted art form that encompasses a broad range of styles and expressions.

The word you're looking for is elicit.

There's no point to this thread, if you don't like Nebraska, put them on ignore and be less stressed.

    You're welcome,

  4. Any WATMMers (Japanese or not) chilling in Japan? I’ll be here for a couple years - not in Tokyo though.

Thinking of heading to Tokyo in middle of June for a Jim O’Rourke and friends live show. Would be great to meet up!

Luton town are in 3rd with 4 games to go. Promotion to the Premier League is looking more and more real.

5 points behind the Blades and they have a match in hand. Feel like you'll be in the playoff rather than automatic promotion. I'm for 'boro but it would be lovely to see any of those four in the playoff spots now in the prem again.

first time I was introduced to this soundtrack composer was in the Utopia TV show

I did like the score for white lotus quite a lot - didn't realize he was the same guy as Utopia! I loved Utopia - and I just realized I don't think I watched season 2 of that, thanks for the reminder!

Bartlett's character is a brilliant Basil Fawlty, and the ongoing skirmish between him and whatshisface (Plop from The Office) is so fuckin good. And again that theme tune ramping things up.

There's also a tendency (in both seasons) to give the characters a nuanced personality. We're presented with a group of somewhat archetypal characters, then constantly thrown curveballs as their personalities and motives. You end up sympathizing with and resenting almost each character equally by the end of it and makes it feel like such a heady ride. And, I may be a softee here, but I found the son's story genuinely uplifting. When he fucks off from be relegated to living in the kitchenette and starts sleeping on the beach and with the canoe team and all? Good stuff.

I did like quite a lot of the characters, but found most of the storylines to be...a little pedestrian? i dunno. Like it was good, but not great?

Watched The Banshees of Inisherin on the plane recently. Darkly funny, some really well delivered lines and gorgeous scenery. 8 chens out of 10.

Did you need subtitles? We did ?

Nope. The brogue wasn't that thick. Also probably helped I was listening through headphones, so didn't have to deal with the compression issues as much, they duck dialogue under the audio so much on streaming services these days.
