Buying a TV - Part II

Ok, so, now I need new information from the gracious WATMM. I found a TV that I like (panasonic 32" lcd) but because of space issues I am considering using it both for a tv (only watching dvds) and as a computer monitor.

Has anyone ever made an lcd tv their computer monitor? Will a 32" monitor drive me crazy? or will it just be awesome? or will I ruin my eyes?

Can't say I'm not excited about 32" watmm general banter, but i dont want it to give me headaches and stuff. advice?

here's the tv:

I suppose you could get it set up with a wireless keyboard and just sit farther back if its too much for your eyes.

Also you can set the resolution lower so you dont need to read the screen with binoculars.

I say go for it, The only time it would even be an issue is when doing stuff thats heavily text based, but when it comes time to play games/watch movies etc you will be a happy camper.

thats just my opinion though, I've never had my lappy set up with anything other than its built in 18"

after searching for 3 weeks i bought one of these; http://www.amazon.co.uk/Strato-19-DVBT-LCD-Black/dp/B001E8R6KY

19" HD ready TV with inbuilt freeview for £130, i was pretty stoked. the hardest thing to find was something with decent resolution as even high-end large tvs might have a 600x800 resolution when you plug your computer in - this has 1440 x 900. at the moment i use it as a 2nd monitor, perfect for both adobe cs3 work and music making (sequencer on the left, plugins on the right).

my opinion is that you should think hard about how much pleasure you derive from having a large screen to watch DVDs on. unless you're gonna start dishing out on bluray/HD stuff then 32" isn't worth the money, and especially not as a monitor. that'll just be annoying.

i used my 46 inch as monitor for a while, it's pretty awesome

i don't anymore since i got my laptop

yeah, if I had a laptop I would not be doing this. How far away from the 46 inch did you sit?

3 to 6 feet, depending on what i was doing. closer for text oriented sites or far away for like youtube or playing games

i dont get it

computer + internet = TV

why bother with TV at all

haha, I definitely think this is a generational thing, particularly for us 30somethings (I think Hanratty's one too) who grew up in days when the most entertainment value you could get out of your computer was playing lemonade stand on an Apple IIc.

While I love the internets for the endless spectrum of free entertainment it provides (particularly of the adult variety), there's something comforting about there being a finite choice of entertainment selections available at a given time from which to choose, according to your whims of the moment. For example I wouldn't go out and rent Waterworld, nor would I be arsed to download it, but if I'm parked on the couch and scroll across it, you can bet your sweet ass I'll probably watch some of it, unless I find anything better on.

My new Samsung for the bedroom has a basic Internet interface called Infolink for news, weather etc. However in the next 18 months many manufacturers will integrate Internet and DVR functionality into flatscreen sets, so the integration really isn't that far away.

i am 30, but i still consider the internet to be infinitely better than tv. But i guess in my old age I am becoming slightly less interested in compressed audio/video and looking for a beautiful image and beautiful sound. We are just watching dvds on it, it's not like I'm rich or anything. But I like to watch original dvds and listen to original cds in a proper setting.

Yeah, there's nothing like watching some decent films on the sofa. Probably the only reason I haven't ditched my TV yet... that and The Simpsons/Futurama. Shame, watching digital TV on an LCD these days is like watching Youtube too. Two steps forward and one step back.

Tell me about it... only the HD channels look decent on an HDTV - regular SD broadcasts (digital or not) are way too pixelated, and changing the input resolution on the TV/Cable box doesn't seem to do much.

Anyone know of a way around this? Something obvious I'm missing?

Press the button that looks like this:

Then see if you can find the thing that looks like this:

That tip was for free, but the next one I'm charging for.
