i'm working on a new piece of music this is just one part of the tapestry, i don't intend to leave it as is or to let it play out for this long

i definitely did feel like posting it though!

pretty ace, it almost sounds like if there's some jackson's sample on it

I don't even listen much music anymore. i blame rushup edge.

case in point. the wait/reward ratio is summed up by "driving a hundred miles for a spliff and a cold beer."

I find myself rediscovering past musical interests to find I still get into a lot of the same stuff (for example: old school jungle, Arlo Guthrie, Danzig, Sepultura, T Rex, it's all pretty random).

It is near impossible for me to get into any new "idm" these days.

I just end up comparing everything to AFX. Ceephax was the first new "idm" artist that I got into in quite some time and that was maybe 3 years ago.

I haven't gotten into anything by Autechre since Confield.

I haven't gotten into Squarepusher since Ultravisitor.

I check out lots of things that all you guys post with the hopes of discovering something good but when it comes to purely electronic music, most of it just sounds like rubbish to me. Especially if it's not really supposed to be used as dance music.

Mostly, stuff ends up sounding either too much like lounge music or like nerdy, esoteric bleeps and blips that you can't really dance to. Really. You just can't.

The stuff I hear here that I end up liking is stuff like in that Italo Disco thread.

I think I'm just an extremely picky person. I may actually be doomed, to some extent.

I'll still get into anything new by AFX or Ceephax... any day.

Otherwise, I guess I'll keep trying.

you just don't know / are not aware of the good stuff.

then again i think you see creation and strict, structured composition as an ego related thing? and that it's less pure or enlightened than something pre-real or something.. i don't know. i disagree with this hierarchical thinking. i think it's relevant to our own experience here to see these sophisticated expressions.

you need to explain why you think liking/finding interesting/being nourished by composed music is linked to being deep in a trance.

I don't feel spiritually snobby about music like this. There's no philosophy behind my changing tastes. But patterns I've noticed: Most of the music I listen to and enjoy now leads to my feeling deeply moved and/or sobbing. Or thrashing about. I treat music as a tool to activate move and release energy. Bjork, Fleet Foxes, religious music, A Perfect Circle, music that feels close to nature. Key here is that it's an expression of the in limbo between suffering and spiritual beauty, and away from any sort of harsh mechanics, which I see as indulgent. I like music that gets painted gently into my consciousness, or touches on something strictly angry but not aggressive, not directed at anyone, Converge, #12, etc. As for electronic music, as ambient as possible is good. Jan Jelenik, Julien Neto, and I don't know how to classify something like Microstoria, but that's nice too... possibly. Playful, organic, gentle, kind, healing, expressive, etc.

Generally experiences that alter my consciousness in a crude way turn me off. I don't like getting stoned or drunk much anymore, taking pills is pretty much out of the question, even masturbation is pretty coarse for me, as organic as an orgasm feels. I was playing Super Mario Galaxy and felt like throwing up and redoing the game with my own refinements to add depth and integrity to the showmanship. watching all the theatrics, spinning stars, Mario blasting off and coming at the screen before landing in each galaxy. I guess I do feel snobby. I think the overstimulation in media and entertainment is an expression of manic ego hunger and all the theatrics come off as masturbatory and substanceless to me. VHS head makes me feel like I am eating McDonald's burger patties and watching ass porn with my violently drunk uncle. Kid606 type shit gives me a fucking headache. Luke Vibert is fun, but it feels too much like a weird robotrip. Bjork's Vespertine is like making love to an angel and watching the cosmos shimmer with intimacy and affection. I don't feel so violently confused inside and bursting with energy. I feel like being quiet, wishing for serenity and refining my way of being more than I want to consume or experience.

Anyway, my vision of art for myself is that it's meant to heal and a lot of artists put out their best work and get big while they're healing, but they get caught up in artistry and it becomes an indulgence later. I think finding nourishment in certain types of music is anesthesia and abstraction from the reality of our being disguised as nourishment. Filling an emotional void with cheetohs instead of delighting slowly in a ripe avocado for the avocado. I can't judge what kind of music that is for anyone else, but IDM beat driven bouncy shit feels dry and crusty to me.

this is magic

this is the trance, not trance music

you just need to hear better music

holy music

this is holy music

This is beautiful. I only listened for a few minutes. What is it?

edit: oh, i see. you posted it.

This brings to mind that I want to feel connected to the human beings and their experience of the world before the music. So I like to actually see the ordinary people singing and expressing themselves. I feel too distant from a musician who isn't expressing him or herself lyrically, which is pretty new for me. I used to think words got in the way, but they feel pretty central to my experience now that my focus has shifted to the artist himherself.

Nice. I was kind of disappointed the beat didn't drop. We listened to that in Thomas's car as I started to understand my confusion.

Would like to have the patience to listen to this more carefully. I think I might really dig the atonal amelodic stuff you're into if I meditate into it.

This is like Xiu Xiu gets raped in hell for eons and then comes back and still wants to make music. I don't like it.

FOR YOUR IDM/ELECTRONIC DISORDER (if you really care to enjoy some music you should give these a chance):

Annoying. I don't want to move my head and it doesn't seem to touch anything lower than my neck. I could dance to it though.

This brought me to tears instantly.

Excellent. This processes information.

Fun, very nourishing. I'd have to get over myself in some significant ways to listen to this in my bedroom.

nice. i'm really glad you gave those a chance.

regarding mortan feldman - good stuff. worth investigation - another good one is

feldman was good friends with john cage. i was wondering if you've ever listened to Cage's Sonatas and Interludes for Prepared Piano because that's one of my very favorites and I think you might potentially like it.

to be true though, happycase, this piece is what makes me feel deeply, what helps me see:

listen a while before writing it off

I might still listen to IDM but its such a hollow genre name that you always feel like youre talking about it in the past tense, nowadays you have the James Blakes and Burials and Falty DLs and Caribous and Bibios and whatnot, I suppose thats what IDM has become but all the aesthetic of a bearded sociopath in a bedroom has moved on with technology and culture. To me IDM is only a handful of records which I love but they are finite (apart from Autechre it would seem) and I'm fairly tired of them by this point, if I listen to Drukqs or Double Figure or Go Spastic or Chiastic Slide a few times now there is an inevitable quiescence period that seems to get longer and longer each time.
