musical family ?

Recommended Posts

my mom used to listen to ambient music & she had a casio vl-tone, so that's prolly where i got my start

one of my uncles used to self-produce lo-fi experimental guitar music back in the late 80s. i have one of his albums on cassette but it's so quietly mixed that i can barely make anything out. maybe that was the intention???

uhh lessee...my sister played violin & ocarina for a while but i don't think i ever got any samples off her.

Dad played guitar. Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Hank Williams, Hank Snow, etc. Then he got into bluegrass hardcore and learned to play the banjo like a motherfucker as a midlife crisis thing or something. He was amazing. Played every day, all day. Then just stopped. Now retired, he fixes old guitars and mandolins.

He never got into what I was doing, but he didn't mind it either.

neither of my parents are musical at all but there's a tradition in the extended family of holding parties every weekend and playing music on the harmonium and tabla w vox. can't say that's necessarily fed into any of my passions per se.

Heh, sounds similar to my dad, although he was more into The Shadows, Deep Purple, etc. He played guitar in a rock band until he was 20 or so, then started a softer band and eventually got into bluegrass banjo and became a fkn virtuoso on the thing (even now with arthritis forcing him to use only two fingers and thumb to play). Got into warranty repairs for Fender and various independent music stores and has now retired, occasionally inventing things and doing independent repair work.

So, I'd say I got my passion for music from my dad :emotawesomepm9:

He's not really into the styles I play (apart from the occasional acoustic or surf stuff that I make) but can appreciate the melodic content.

My parents actually got together because my dad taught my mum how to play bass (she wanted to be like Suzi Quatro). Cute story! My mum doesn't play anymore though, but still owns a 70s Mustang bass which is pretty damn amazing.

Kind of a musical family, my parents had us play instruments in elementary school but we all hated it. Honestly hated music in general until i bought a cassette walkman randomly and started listening to old Beatles cassettes. Got into making music from people i met in college who were already creating. Definitely much more influenced by friends than family when it comes to music

My nans sisters son (or something far enough away that I don't Know him or have anything to do with him) is Martin Taylor

A shame he's too distant because he's won guitar magazine jazz guitarist of the year like 3 or 4 times or something :mezzed:

Otherwise , my dad got me listening to music pretty young , he has good tastes but is only just picking up the sax
