  1. Forgot to use my last few days of holiday up, before our tax year ends. Work policy is that if you don't use em, you lose em. But because I covered a lot over the last year for an injured coworker, I'm getting paid for the days I didn't use. At the rate of my recent pay rise, no less. What up.
  2. Of what I've seen of it, BotW does look good. I especially like how the game leaves you alone to figure out almost everything. Will definitey get a Switch...just not yet. Might get one for Xmas or my birthday. The map looks huge too. Makes me wonder if I'll suffer the same fatigue I felt when playing Far Cry 3 or Just Cause 3: so much to do, but do I really care? I'm sure I will.
  3. My bathroom is covered in fucking blue lint from new fluffy towels. Bane of my life.
  4. Taken a liking to buying cheap classical records from charity stores + other places. Bought some Satie, Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky, all for low low prices. Great reading music, will take a photo eventually. Swordfish Records has an entire wall of classical records for £3 each, plenty of everything there along with lush box sets. Will go back periodically.
  5. As long as I get to laugh at him first, I don't mind. Besides, dyslexia is also hereditary and I've avoided that while my brother didn't, so maybe I have dodged the baldness too.
  6. My older brother is going bald. Naturally, I feel for him and understand it's not a laughing matter.
  7. Payday 2 with buddy still, kinda cool to be the good player in a game for once. Also when the fuck did it become a forty gig install? Holy shit. Also reinstalled FFXIII-2 to scratch my RPG fix, which is still surprisingly one of the best FF games I've played. Fun in all the ways FFXIII failed to be. Just wish my computer was a little better so it ran 60fps constantly.
  8. Ate a bowl of peas, carrots and sweetcorn for my midnight snack (instead of usual fatty garbage) without a gun held to my head and had been looking forward to doing so all day. Feels like I'm halfway to being an adult.

Reading DNA: The Secret of Life by James Watson, which is for research (copy is stuffed with post-it notes). Also bought a copy of the complete works of Shakespeare from the same charity shop, a thousand page hardcover I don't suspect I will read soon but looks impressive. At work, reading Granta 106, which features short stories by Eleanor Catton and Ha Jin. Pretty good, might get more of these Granta magazines.
  10. Payday 2 again. Why I, a peaceful soul, enjoy a violent game where the main enemies are cops is beyond me. And I'm so good at killing them too. Also I appear to be one of two players who isn't using hacks to get 110% accuracy on levels.

Bought The Thackery T. Lambshead Cabinet of Curiosities edited by Ann & Jeff Vandermeer because it contains the last Ted Chiang story I have yet to read (but now have and feel sad there is no more Chiang to find :( ). Looking forward to reading the rest of the stories and hopefully finding a few new authors to follow.
  12. Technically, in the UK it is illegal to rip a CD you own to your computer, regardless of it being a personal copy. In fact, any kind of format shift is illegal here. Not that a single soul has been prosecuted but the law is still outdated and quite strange. iTunes is complicit in the crime too and liable. If I told a police officer I saw a man rip a CD to his computer if they would take action?

White Noise was enjoyable, Delillo is a very quotable author. Will go on to Underworld at some point (ugh, another 800 page book...)

Wood is his most normal book I hear (yet to read it but will). Try Sputnik Sweetheart or After Dark, both are quite short if with additional elements of the supernatural.
  15. Because it's Nintendo and Nintendo have no idea what they're doing. Hoping for a few more Wii U sales before saying 'btw, you can play Wii U games on the switch' And by 'few' I do mean 'few', as in 'not many'

  17. This, Nintendo has been rubbish for ages. Thing is, I don't really want a PS4 either. Why not just make the Nintendo shop stretch onto the ole interweb and let me play it on my PC? I'll gladly buy it for the PC if they did! Eventually, I'm sure it will. But Nintendo has for years been very worried about piracy, so I doubt they'd jump to an 'open' ecosystem like PC any time soon. They're just now dipping their toes in the waters with Mario Go on iOS (I'm sure Apple touted how secure their gaming platform was, and you did hear about how the game has to always be connected online, because of piracy concerns? yeah.), and eventually Android, they'll try and stay in 'secure' ecosystems where they can charge ridiculous amounts of money for their aging/near-worthless IPs. The whole thing about their incoming online service being paid, and to seem competitive they're giving subscribers a free game to play each month...but only to play during that month, unlike of course PS and XBox. We're talking Nintendo games, 30 years old. They're all about making every last cent off of every ounce of nostalgia and return on their marketing dollars spent on the new generation. And its working, cause tons of Zelda fans are gonna spend around $400 ($300, +$60 game, + various accessories just to make the console not a fucking hassle to use as its intended) just to play that one game. I ain't knocking you if you do, though. If it's worth it to you and you've got the cash to spend, go for it. Maybe it'll turn out to be a great console, who knows. Original Wii looked ridiculous at first, but it turned out to be decent. I sure bought a PS4 when Bloodborne came out, played nothing but it for months. Each to their own, I just want to be able to play Super Mario 3 on my Playstation god damn it. I don't want a Switch either was my point, esp. if for just one game and likely not many more down the line. By which I mean if there's only one game I want, I doubt I will buy it. For the PS4, would really like to play Ratchet & Clank + Let it Die but I ain't buying a console for two games.
  18. The only game there of moderate excitement to me is the No More Heroes title. Can't exactly say I'm excited at the thought of buying a console for one game. This, Nintendo has been rubbish for ages. Thing is, I don't really want a PS4 either. Why not just make the Nintendo shop stretch onto the ole interweb and let me play it on my PC? I'll gladly buy it for the PC if they did!

Forgot to mention I'm also reading a little book of short stories by Nicola Barker, Heading Inland, which includes a man who feeds his hand to an owl. Classy stuff. And I have a copy of White Noise to work when I finish Shark by Will Self. Looking forward to it!

I mean, does that novel also contain a scene with a professor sleeping with and stalking his students, or pushing an ex- out of a moving car? I bet it's all just scenes from his favorite books, and he was perfectly moral and rational, and it's all just performance art. edit: and don't forget that most of his non-fiction was made up, that's pretty important
