Now That Trump's President... (not any more!)
cwmbrancity replied to Nebraska's topic in General Banter
pretty grim even for the Don of Drumpfs, the zero extrapolation of US and certain European govts foreign policy in the middle east and Afghanistan adding fuel to the migration fire is 1 thing, but the audience that feeds on this bs is a tad scary. meanwhile in Germany, the nation of Trump's paternal origins, some bright spark is fighting ignorance in a truly integrative way: https://inews.co.uk/essentials/news/world/refugees-internet-dating-germany-lets-integrate/- 22,233 replies

only things missing are Black Sabbath & Slade how could they not give Ozzy a part somewhere? just to hear his mumbling dulcet Brummie tones would add a deeper layer of authenticity, or Noddy Holder ffs in a top hat n flares

How does the World view America these days?
cwmbrancity replied to Rubin Farr's topic in General Banter
theory & practice are all underpinned by money, like a lot of human systems its 1 aspect of US life i found v refreshing, the notion of being a citizen as opposed to a subject (compared to Britain's monarchy as an example), more scrutiny of public spending as opposed to say the EU's Common Agricultural Policy corruption farce and thats not a pro-Brexit line. Its surprisingly subtle & i gained new respect for the questioning of how tax revenue was spent by govt by all classes & races of folks (accountability of govt). the US isnt the first nation to experience shady govts and ignorant so-called citizens, but its unfortunate that perceptions around the world are often formed & digested via some gun nut ranting about oaths and constitutional sanctity due to the explosion in technology the real tragedy is how these core values were always going to be undermined & exploited by an economic control system that has maintained elites as well as any other culture has in history or prehistory for that matter -

How does the World view America these days?

from a quick dabble that old bloke sounds west-country/Irish at times i found the shift from NY to Philly to Baltimore to DC/northern VA was always interesting, geographically for the US not that far apart, but by accent theres a huge difference there was BBC radio doc that had found German recordings of British WWI prisoners of war from locations now technically London suburbs.... complete change within a couple of generations from borderline yokel to ya gets meh bwlad -

the anti gringo brigade was pretty vast at one point south of the US border..... where do you even begin with specific regimes etc? tbh that reads more like borderline caucasian Baltimore sounds than me olde cockney sparrow after a couple of sherberts -

maybe grip the novel and have a peruse.....its savagely stark and the descent into class-chaos is detailed with malevolent glee, which is where the filem adaptation starts to breaks down

High-Rise ..... tedious as fuck & Tom Hiddlestone doesnt cut it, almost catches that cement stench of brutal post-war architecture/Clockwork Orange moral societal squalor, but by 40mins = who cares. Dont think Mr Ballard would've been impressed & most of Ben Wheatley's other gear has been fairly solid. bank holiday morning meh better off taking the dog down by the sea/10

Rosemary's Baby fails to make what happens to the main character look inescapable enough for the movie to really work for me. I suppose you could explain that as Satan's little helpers selecting a complete pushover for the job (or turning her into one) but the fact remains that it doesn't make for a very tense movie, when it could have been terrifying. I've always liked Repulsion better because Carol is so much more interesting. You guys made me remember I still haven't seen The Tenant, time to move that one up a couple of places on the backlog. comparing the more overt "Horror" depicted in RB to the taut deeply psycho-sexual thriller that lurks in Repulsion doesnt really equate, other than the director involved who pitches fairly different tones in both. Side by side, one is sensational (RB), while the other delves into far deeper psychological recesses (Repulsion). Dont know if you've seen Polanksi's horror comedy The Fearless Vampire Killers, which is a kitsch olde romp in itself and as different again as the 2 mentioned above. granted, Mia Farrow's doomed journey doesnt have quite the resonant magnitude of say Edward Woodward's copper in The Wicker Man, but its still right up there imho. Repulsion is def a class above doe and CD is beyond scrumptious too, dare i say insanely hot, which adds to the swirl of wtf (eg the scene with those hands reaching out the corridor walls). Def check out The Tenant, but it might disappoint if you compare it directly to Repulsion.

its far from perfect, but it still oozes a darkly paranoid charm Cassavetes does the twitchy duplicitous hubby to perfection (read somewhere Robert Redford was the original casting choice, imagine that if you can) and Ruth Gordon is in finest fettle. She rocks in Harold and Maude (by Hal Ashby), well worth a watch too.

endeavor to persevere it'll prompt some quality tune hunting on top of the more schematic stuff, some of which you'll think are utter pish & some that are ethereal windows into other worlds

2 quality follow on viewings if you got into these themes on The Troubles: Hidden Agenda & Harry's Game (ok a tv mini-series for the latter)....maybe not as explosive but both ratchet up the tension expertly http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099768/ http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084053/
