    Sorry. No embeds activated

Nice track! And the track which it automatically played after - in my case a track by Bean "Skin" - might be different for the rest of you - is good as well. Fits in nicely with new afx tune. For a moment I assumed the other track of the new afx ep was uploaded as well. But it's a different artist altogether. There's so much good stuff out there...jeez. That bean track was from 2017. That's old.

  3. Interesting talk by Bjorn Lomborg.

Warning, he has a different approach to this issue than people around here would normally support. It's a very economical approach. So the anti-capitalists around here are going to explode.

His point about the paris agreement is about how futile it is and how misrepresented its impact is. (based on the models used by the UN itself) Check from 14 mins onward. Basically, the paris agreement is like an obese eating one salad and hoping it will be enough to have a significant (sustainable) impact on health (temperature). The impact of paris can't be measured. Even if implemented successfully. It's like a bucket of water in a raging forrest fire.

How do people feel about the Bandcamp feature to disable streaming of certain songs if they haven't been purchased? Reminds me of the old days, going to Barnes & Noble to listen to the 30 second previews of the tracks on a CD. People don't seem to do this often. I guess it doesn't make sense if you're also sending it all to YouTube, etc.

Annoying. Keeps me from buying. Want to be able to hear the whole thing first. So Im forced to hunt down alternative places to listen to the entire thing.

  5. OK, so before you criticise me about the Armin van Buuren/trance stuff: my counts are contaminated with the stuff I play while training. And while training, yes, a lot of it is the trance stuff you see in this list. Need to have 4/4 trance in my ears when doing my high intensity interval sessions on the concept2 ergometer. ?

Also, the playcounts have been reset half a year ago, so a bunch of favs/often played are still missing.

Also2: spiral staircase has two mentions. so def the secret winner...

  6. Guys, this thread is about Analords. This is not the place to be a cheeky bum and be anal about lossless file formats vs wav files.

Still no Analords in his store. Apart from that one free mp3. Strangely, the only Rephlex release in his bleepstore is from the Tuss. If the rest of his Rephlex releases are put on his store as well, I'd buy them in a heartbeat. Hard to understand what separates this one Tuss release from all the others. (legal arguments? nah...) But it is what it is

  7. I'm currently listening to Microgravity. The "reissue with bonus album" edition. And I'm wondering what you guys' (inclusive for all genders and sexes!) favourite Biosphere album is.

Mine is probably either Microgravity or Patashnik. Never been properly grabbed by his more concept/ambient releases. So I might be missing out massively. And, to be fair, if you're into 90s artificial intelligence IDM, both of these are rather obvious choices. A bit too obvious perhaps. Because the period and style are pretty on the nose.

If you also love his older albums, leave a shout. And more importantly, add suggestions for the people who got their head stuck in the early 90s ('90-'95).

Btw, I love his combination of samples, melodies and rhythms from that early period. He does stand out from the rest of the pack, imo. Although, admittedly, it's very much music from that 90s artificial intelligence/ IDM period. And the juxtaposition of fast beats and spacious ambient on a track like SETI project rubs me in all the right places..

  8.  Thanks for posting. He's indeed a bit cringy, but he's saved by being able to inviting relevant experts and having a good conversation with them. I appreciate the sober and professional take on AI from both experts. I'd hope people like these get to advise governments, because their advice will only be taken seriously by private companies if it's in their interests to do so.

further notes from Hinton, via the BBC:

he goes on to say he thinks the benefits currently outweigh the risks so doesn’t suggest stopping…and mentions even the US deciding to stop would just let other countries make faster progress… all obvious, sure. but the risks are also possibly v serious and the weight of them doesn’t seem fully accounted for, based on his and many others’ statements.

the BBC article ends with these bits not by Hinton but just the author:

Pichai is for all my understanding a very intelligent and talented programmer/coder/whatever. if even he isn’t fully understanding the hobbled/bland Google version of this currently? and basically all of the creators and developers of this stuff are regularly discussing how some stuff is just beyond their comprehension for how it is even happening i mean….that’s kinda worrying.

maybe it’s like the whole airplane lift thing where it’s *mostly* understood but not like 100%…but obviously it works, planes fly…but that shit has always stuck with me too. that lack of understanding contains a lot of space for error and the unknown.

And the risk is about the ability to create and spread misinformation, right? Just to be clear we’re not talking about a terminator scenario here.

  10. In a way, this album impresses me. But at the same time, it's not really my cup of tea. Not sure why. But listening to the songs, it becomes its own satire pretty quick. Every track is lots of reverb and lots of distortion. Some slow beats entering half way. Lots of atmosphere. Lots of drama. Over the top drama. To the point of being as over the top as a Transformers movie.

It sounds like a beautiful soundtrack to a ridiculously boring movie.

Perhaps it needs more listens, but currently, I'd skip these tracks like I'd skip a transformers movie. ?

  11. With the amount of people dying to gun violence each day in the US, you'd almost think the civil war has already begun ?

Couldn't help but google some stats

    https://www.teamenough.org/gun-violence-statistics

    Quote

    GUN VIOLENCE STATISTICS

Every day, on average, 316 people in America are shot in murders, assaults, suicides and suicide attempts, unintentional shootings, and police intervention.

Every day, 210 people are shot and survive.

    • 95 are injured in an attack
    • 10 survive a suicide attempt
    • 90 are shot unintentionally
    • 4 are shot in a legal intervention

Every day, 106 people die from gun violence.

    • 39 are murdered
    • 64 kill themselves
    • 1 is killed unintentionally
    • 1 dies but the intent is unknown

OMG.. that's...that's painful. Too much truth in one drawing

As a general response to Chomsky, this video is an interesting mental exercise in political philosophy.

  13. Just a quick general response regarding the hype. This is not specifically aimed at you, @auxien or anyone else. To be honest, this is mostly about my frustrations regarding the situation surrounding AI.

Like for example that call for a 6 months pause in AI development. Because we risk creating something we cant control and we need these 6 months to get a better grip on the risks involved (https://www.dw.com/en/tech-experts-call-for-6-month-pause-on-ai-development/a-65174081). Stuff like this gets my blood boiling, tbh. Who with their right mind would believe these 6 months would matter? Apart from a bunch of people within AI development who calculated they are 6 months behind in development and hope the sheeple follow their aprils fools joke. (Elon Musk…) Just think about the widespread serious response this generated. That stuff bothers me. I

’m still looking for the widespread apologies from people saying they fell for the joke. If you’ve seen it, give me a call. I’m afraid people still assume it was serious and the singularity is “more close than we realize”.

Please, if you’re seriously worrying about the singularity, you should get off social media for a month. What you should be worried about however, is your job. Thats the only part of the hype that should keep you on your toes. All the other stuff, lets call them the @Alcofribas trigger points, you can ignore freely. To name a few: consciousness, sentient, awareness. Ignore them not just for yourself. But also for the sanity of said watmm regular. And myself. ?

apologies if i’m conflating anything i shouldn’t be, i truly was asking for information…if my understanding is off i’m glad to learn how.

will check out that vid on transformers as part of this tech, thanks for linking.

If you want more, check this one as well. His explanation of how the architecture works is insufferable. (when he's trying to explain it using his hands...) Even Lex visibly can't keep up. Besides the explanation- which you got from the previous video - he makes some interesting comments.

    Key points:

    - AI is converging (for the last 5 years) to using this transformer architecture. because it can do "anything". you can throw any "problem" at it. for the sake of the argument, you can read "problem" as function. Or in other words, the transformer is very good at solving specific problems or having a specific kind of functionality. (as opposed to being able to do everything at once, btw. the architecture works best when it is used on a single function, like being a chatbot for chatGPT. which is an essential feature for those who are thinking about "general intelligence" - or whatever that means)

    - General approach with current AI field is to use the unchanged (!) transformer architecture but play with all the other options. (this tells you how important a good architecture is, btw. if you screw up the architecture, you're nowhere. not even data or countless amounts of paramaters will save you)
