  1. You didn't like it as much as 2 but you score it an 8? Fucking hell! Is 2 your favourite film or something? lets just pretend that I kinda like Iron Man IM2 would score 9 and Avengers is a 10 for me as far as comic book films go The Fantastic Four get's minus points for letting me watch the entire film without one glimpse of Jessica Alba's fine buttocks
  2. Iron Man 3 - didn't like as much as #2 but generally entertaining throughout. The comedy worked even if the end was a little slap dash and silly. 8/10
  3. Nick Drake - the Elvis of hipsters
  4. Its crazy to think that if it hadn't been for the documentary you might not have even bothered with the film at all. I'm glad at least the documentary is serving a purpose in encouraging noobs to watch the film for the first time. No I've seen the Shining plenty of times dude just not on blu-ray/hi-def TV knowing what to look out for as Kurbricks stuff is made for a big screen. I think some people took Room 237 a little too seriously as I was personally laughing at a lot at some of the OCD's especially with the so called 'erect penis' freeze frame. After watching it again the the theory of it depicting Kubrick lying to his wife about the moon landing footage could relate to certain scenes out of context. I'm noticing that everytime I watch a Kubrick film after a while it seems to get better each time.
  5. Absolutely, I've never heard such an obvious 'plucked string' type synth generator - I mean I'm not saying that's bad at all it just it seems a little silly pretending it's something that it's not. I caught him in Manchester a couple of years ago in fact I think it was his first gig in a while, I didn't realise until he played that he was the peculiar chap with a funny accent sat right across from us chatting up some hipster chick before the gig. After the show we all kinda went over to shake hands and let him know we enjoyed the gig but the moment I started talking shop he scuttled away his collection of pedals and FX very quickly. Even tho he had a mac on stage it was mainly for loops and backing tracks and his sound seemed more like a creative shoegaze type noise tweaking rather than complex digital processing. Not sure about the bi-polar stuff but he appeared to be the romantic arty type rather than an introverted nerd but maybe that's what he wanted that hipster chick to think eh?
  6. The Shining - after watching the Room 237 I had to give it a spin on blu-ray. There's certainly metaphors beyond a mere slasher/horror and deliberate continuity errors from such a perfectionist. Most of the spiel from the documentry tells you more about the ocd of the fans but theres no denying the odd way the movie is put together. Jack Nicholson is the shit too. Kubrick/10
  7. 2001 bluray- Watching this on a bigish screen in the dark at decent volume is the only way imho. I kinda got the dead pan humour with Hal a lot more this time round. Some bits are looking a tad dated now but for the most its still a stunning visual-audio space opera. 11/10
  8. I was never into ATR back in the day but I can appreciate the statement they made. The only impression that Alec Empire gives today is a prime example of someone whos got carried away with his own hype and has flown well and truly up ones own backside.
  9. Code 46 - The strong cast (Tim Robbins. Samantha Morton) make it worth a look for die hard sci-fi fans as it conceptually falls somewhere between Gattica and Blade Runner but no where near as good as either. A different and stylish new world order style lo budget sci-fi that got lost in the dreary romantic plot line. Probably quite cool when it was made (2003) but the Coldplay ending really dated the film. 6.5/10 Room 237 - Documentary about people who are fanatical about the subliminal meanings in Kubrick's 'The Shining' ranging from the ridiculous to the Nazi holocaust and most interestingly the clues to Kubrick being involved the fake Apollo 11 footage as well as an insight into the man with an IQ of 200. watmm/10 (renting The Shining on bluray asap) Casshern - Good diesel punk styling and ott action sequences done in the way only the Japanese can get away with. Seemed like a mish mash of different films all rolled up into one that falls into some very deep and profound anti war statements towards the end which does get dragged out quite a bit. I think they were trying to make something truly epic on a fraction of the budget that was needed but it's still entertaining and worth a watch. 7.5/10
  10. they can get noisy and very industrial with the beats
  11. DJ Scotch Egg's new band Devilman are well worth checking out especially live. https://soundcloud.com/small-but-hard/devilman-album-mash-up-mix
  12. Force Unleashed 2 - it's OK, nice background details to blow up
  13. But the story was so average and you could see all the twists and turns coming from miles away. Not wanting to spoil but I did twig some things out early on but there were a few things that took me by surprise too. The latter third did seem a bit rushed with not much about the new characters. Like I said worth a watch for the visual design.
  14. couldn't quite get into this one when I first got it as its a little too busy and samey to listen through all in one go hence why I've put these other albums off until now going to give it another try now I'm getting more into his sound
  15. Mark Fell, UL8 - very nice sound design that sticks out fro the rest of the RN crowd, the middle bit is a little weak but the Acids in the Style of Rian Treanor sends shivers down your spine (Autechre take note). Mark Fell, Manitutshu - SND without the annoying clap, a more rythmic work. Both albums = chin scratch/10 Thomas Koner, Nuuk - dark celestial textures without getting too harsh, a tranquil vortex 9/10 Solvent, Demonstration Tapes 1997-2000 - quality electro and electro pop. all Ceephax fans should pay attention if you don't already have it 9/10 Bjorn Torske, Kokning - nice melodic stuff but not quite as good as the funky Fiel Knapp 8/10 Lineland, Logos for Love - took a while to full appreciate the subtleties in sound design of this quirky album 8.5/10 Nathan Fake, Steam Days - excellent debut album 8/10
  16. Oblivion - Kosinsk's great eye for scenery and 70's concept sci-fi design was in abundance and made the film. Tom Cruise was manageable although the film did lack a little charisma and suffered some horrendous overcooked Michael Bay esque romantic scenes. Whilst having nods and cliches to other classic sci-fi the film but within the constraints of a big blockbuster just had enough of its own merit to make it worth watching. Although lacking in certain areas Oblivion has the right ingredients for a decent sci-fi flick that shouldn't look dated in years to come (kinda like Minority report) even if it just misses 'classic' status I didn't feel short changed leaving the IMAX. 8/10 Fish Story - saw this on film four last night and its one of te most original films I've seen in a while 10/10 How to Train Your Dragon - very enjoyable 8/10 8/10
  17. Saving Private Ryan would have been better if they'd cut out the middle of the film which really drags to fook also Hank's gun-ho all American 'I want an Oscar' speech is just a bit too much. The battle scenes kick ass tho.
  18. there are two overdubs, the original 90's VHS release and the later DVD remaster that an new script so you could actually follow what was going on a little better but I found the the voice acting was a little flat compared to the original which is the version I prefer in a nostalgic way
  19. As far as lush goes God of War and Uncharted are pretty much the flagship games that let you know your not playing an XB360. MGS4 is not so good if you don't like extended cut scenes or Killzone 2&3 if your not a for the gun-ho but they revised Ninja Gaiden for the PS3 is pretty sweet and Metal Gear Reverence follows its trend. If you like racing games then Wipeout HD and GT5 are essential and really good online too. On the PSN Dead Nation, Flow, Sine Mora, Soldner-X are worth an look also this crazy title from the Saturn. yet to check out these
  20. I rented Ico/Shadow of the Colossus HD but realized they are going to take more than the rental is worth to complete is it worth buying? they have that Studio Gibley charm but a little long winded for the time I get to play games these days
  21. Stripes - Bill Murray being Bill Murray in a Police Academy style pre Ghostbusters Ivan Reitman warm up. Bill Murray/10 Johnny Gets His Gun - after watching this I'll never join the army even if they were dropping bombs on my mums back yard. One of the most genuinely depressing and haunting movies i've ever seen. 9.9/10
