Saw Ichi the Killer a couple of years back on FilmFour and just recently got a copy of Gozu. Probably some of the most surreal cinema i've seen in a long time. Anyone else?

ichi the killer certainly is fucked up, thats for sure.

i don't think i've seen any of his other films, i should get involved. any suggestions?

i've just recently decided to go out and watch loads of takeshi kitano films because i've seen various films with him in and heard so much fuss about him.

watched zatoichi last month and i just bought kikujiro which i will be watching this evening. any other suggestions for him?

edit: seen battle royale and takeshi's castle :)

audition really let me down, i only really enjoyed when you found why and how she turned out towards the end, i just got bored really, but i've heard dead or alive is good?

han-bi (aka violent cop) & brother which just fun but very similar (possibly a remake?) to a russian film of the same name and idea by takashi kitano

Yasujiro Ozu is another good japanese director, i recomend these films by him

Kenji Mizoguchi is also good i recomend

Gozu was amazing.

My other fave is The Happiness of the Katakuris.

Dead or Alive is insane.

Here is the opening sequence...

I love that the next scene starts with the dude in his underwear going faster and faster on the exercise bike, shouting "HAI! HAI! HAI! HAI! HAI!..."

i feel like he's too ambitious to really solidify some of his optioned films, kind of hit or miss. did like audition, happiness of the katakuris (from what i remember) and his harry potter-ass yokai monster flick

Yes, Dead Or Alive was an extremely good film, especially the apocalyptic ending which just came out of nowhere. On second viewing you can see that it was the only logical conclusion to the film. Audition is his second best film, i think. One Missed Call was OK, Ichi was OK but just too weird especially the camerawork at the start.

Miike averages about 3 films per year so its hard to keep up with his output.

For Miike check out Visitor Q, watched this again a few weeks ago and had forgotten how disturbing it is, and Fudoh.

For Kitano check out Sonatine, Kids Return, Violent Cop, A Scene at the Sea and Boiling Point.

For good Korean cinema check out anything by Chan-wook Park, Je-gyu Kang, Ki-duk Kim and Joon-ho Bong.

the only Takeshi Miike film i loved was 'the Great Yoki war' a film that brought back for me memories of old 80s dark fantasy films like Labyrinth

not a fan of any of his 'hard' stuff that i've seen reminds me too much of a tarantino's bad films like Kill bill

YES YES

i think the subject matter's just fucking awesome, and as far as a (probably) mediocre budget goes, miike pulls all the stops.

but the original yokai movies are fun too.

the bird people in china is the best.

and some of his straight up yakuza films are good as well. gozu and visitor q are my favorites of his more extreme stuff.
