but i just spent the better part of the past hour playing a really fun disco/pop/funk set on the decks for the peeps who are crashing at my apartment this weekend

and as it turns out

they were all asleep or trying to sleep, while i was banging tunes

which means none were appreciated

i mean, c'mon

DJing at parties where people constantly complain about the music. I've tried this a bunch of times. One time I was hired to play at a party where I was told by the guy who hired me to play electronic music. Turned out he was the only one who wanted to hear electronic music, so I had a horde of angry girls in my face all night bitching about the music. I ended up packing up 30 minutes before schedule and leave the place. I got paid though.

Haha, everyone who DJs out has had some sort of similar experience though. I've played to empty rooms, places where the owner rushed over saying "No jungle, it brings in crackheads", people asking for Kasabian and Bon Jovi, the list goes on.... as long as there's times when everyone is dancing and loving it, it all balances out!

If you're playing to a room of passed out people, no point in doing it at all though surely?

Once, while DJing, I had requests that I should stop mixing and just play tracks with pauses between them. ``Don`t you feel stupid pushing those buttons? Just play those tracks normally, it will be much more fun for you.`` ..weird

HA! I've experienced the same thing. A guy came up to me and told me not to switch between tracks so quickly. The worst part was that he was dressed up as a penguin.

I where once asked to play electro/electro-bass music at a gay(!)club. The gays only wanted to hear trance and techno and shit like that. It ended up me playing Gantz Graf - but that after i already killed the dancefloor :D

I have a semi-regular night DJing. It starts at 9pm, but no one really shows up until 11pm.

On the first night I was playing '60s northern soul because I like it, and no one was there yet. At 11, when everyone started showing up, the promoter told me to bring it 10 years forward, so I played funk, '70s soul, disco and whatnot, and the people loved it for the next 3+ hours. It ended up being a great night.

I didn't feel under-appreciated when I was told to switch it up. If you're DJing, you gotta do what's going to work with the crowd. That's what your there for, and presumably getting paid for.

i feel unappreciated on a daily basis at my job.. it's killing me to go there every day and know that i'm working hard and getting no respect at all.. having to deal with constant jabbing at me like "is it done yet?," "when are you doing this?," "check this," "do this" .... i can't get my work done if there's a bastard standing over my shoulder or calling and paging me every 5 minutes.... then my boss takes credit for stuff i did... and he insults me on a regular basis..

oh, perhaps this tirade wasn't what you wanted to hear...

i djed a party last week and tried to play all kinds of good stuff, but all they wanted to hear was crap like "walk it out," "boom boom pow," and the horrid "turn my swag on.." i often feel dejected after these types of things..

so theres this dude that I know. You probably all know someone like him, he's like a beacon of social energy, always controls all the social situations in which his friends are around. He is also pretty condescending and his friends (read: Followers) will always agree with him.

We were rolling on some pills at his place in kingston one time, and I played some different types of IDM and he was all like "Jesus dude, No. No. How about something with a beat?" and i switched it up again "Dan, man, play something that actually has some soul to it, there is nothing to this music" and then they switched the music over to ARMIN FUCKING VAN BUUREN. WTF???? Bullshit awful trance music. I never thought I could hate music so much.

Also every time he was insulting my music taste, he would be addressing me but say it to the rest of the room and close with a guffaw so as to knock me down a few pegs and establish his dominance.

fuck I hate people like that.

Like the time you posted in my Treating the Symptom set thread and didn't comment on the set, only the type of file I might be using... :getlost:

i feel like my entire existence is unappreciated by everyone i know

read 'The Wonder' by Beresford...

this goes out to anyone posting in this thread....

the novel is about this feeling being a reality and how we should get over it....

It is better to be a freak than an average...

you just need to arm up with the more easily accesable and pumping er, "IDM". no headphone music - the knowledge and experience of the music will skew your ability to gauge it objectively for the situation.

in haunting soul's mind he was going to play autechre and open peoples minds, and everyone would fall in love with him for being so special.

apparently it didn't happen.

I'm not an attention whore, I was just high as fuck on E and wanted to hear some actual decent music.

lesson learned: Don't take e with ppl who have vastly differing musical taste.

and I don't care that nobody liked my music, I just hate people who thrive on belittling others.
