I agree with both sentiments, but still enjoyed them nonetheless. As you said in your last post, I'd rather watch a bad Ridley Scott film than most good Hollywood films. Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, Kingdom of Heaven, Body of Lies those films are all extremely derivative and very vanilla even for the genre they are in... i'm not so embarrassed about my love for Lady in the water now! awepittance Posted August 1, 2009 Share Posted August 1, 2009 kingdom of heaven wasn't vanilla. it was actually kind of innovative. i'd have to see the extended edition, i just thought the casting of orlando bloom who i think is a very bad actor was a trendy marketing decision it really brought down the movie for me edit: i honestly don't remember it a whole lot, it's reputation proceeds it and i guess i was just expecting a more interesting film, and you're right out of all the ones overlook mentioned that is probably the most non hollywood. The problem with Kingdom of Heaven is the script and characterization are as cliche as they come. Here is the Honorable Blacksmith™, plying his trade. Oh no, there is a Twisted and Duplicitous Priest™, what is he up to? Of course, he had a hand in doing the unspeakable to the blacksmith's Raped Wife™. The blacksmith murders the priest in a fit of rage (the priest is so EVIL there is no ambiguity in the act) and must flee. But ho, what's this? He meets his kindly Surprise Biological Father™, who dies but not before giving his son a meal ticket to the promised land. Rounding out the cast are the Honorable Arab™(also featured in Body of Lies), the Villainous Crusader™, the Benevolent but Ailing Leader™ the Bewitching but Politically Saavy and Masculine-Looking Love Interest™ (a staple of Scott films, makes me wonder if he's gay) with her Sickly Child™. Oh yeah, and Jeremy Irons™. Orlando Bloom was one of the less objectionable parts of the movie. I liked some of the battle stuff but overall the movie is comprised of terrible dialogue and some ugly chick mooning at the camera while some drapes blow in slow motion, terribly boring. The story is set to a prequel, which will be about how the alien craft that crash landed on the planet in the original movie came to be there. I'm kind of meh about this, as the mystique of that ship and how it came to be there might be best left to the imagination. Still, Scott as the helm, rather than some hack, can only be a good thing. The 1st one was called Earth Hive from what I remember. I liked it. There were 2 more in the series methinks but I can't remember the names.
