iPhone - jailbreaking and unlocking

i've had my iphone 3gs for almost 2 months now. besides the battery life, and shitty at&t coverage, i really do like it alot

the only things i want to do with it, but can't at the moment, is have a google voice app, and tether my computer to the iphone so i can get online with the laptop

i know if i jailbreak it i can do these things

but i know there was that virus just recently for jailbroken iphone's, but i heard it only affected ones that had the default password for something. but could that one be just the first of many?

are there any other risks when jailbreaking the iphone?

i read somewhere that 10% of iphones and ipod touches are jailbroken

i met one guy who got out of his at&t plan (you have to sign up for 2 years with at&t when buying the iphone) by saying he was moving to some remote part of alaska that didn't have service, and he now has a different provider. is it just that easy to get out of their contract?

any info or firsthand experience relating to this subject would be helpful

I recently acquired a new iphone as well, and am continually amazed at the amazing stuff it can do. I've been hearing a lot about jailbreaking, but I've actually decided not to do it. When you jailbreak it, you are authorizing non-approved software and applications to be installed and run on the phone. This causes a lot of stability issues and drains even more of the battery with processes and things that are constantly running in the background. The iphone works great right now with apple approved software and firmware and I don't see the need to mess around with it. Not worth the trouble or hassle for the non-benefits for me. Unless there is a compelling reason to jailbreak the iphone, I just don't see the point.

just got a new one a couple weeks back. all i wanna do is set the text message alert sound to one of my uploaded sounds rather than one of the 6 shitty default sounds, but everything i've read says that you have to jailbreak the phone to do this. fuckin apple.

i didn't know you could tether without jailbreaking - how do you do that?

but i have a google voice number and would really like to have that google voice app, right now i can text people from the google voice web page, but it doesn't let me call people from there - how is that not violating net neutrality?

Tethering works awesome here in Australia - I played a game of quakelive in the car on the laptop and was winning with good ping too ... It was amazing really.

That has nothing to do with net neutrality. It's all about AT&T not wishing to lose out on their huge contracts.

Jailbreaking is a piece of piss. It's literally download one app and follow the very very simple instructions (laid out in graphical format....)

The virus (or was it a trojan? I can't recall) only affected people who didn't change the default SSH password. Which is very easy to do.

Some jailbroken apps will run in the background, and kill your battery faster than normal. However, there is also an app that allows you to turn off background processes.

If your iPhone gets fucked up, all you have to do is restore through iTunes, and take it in to the Apple store. They'll never know that you jailbroke the device.

tethering is currently not supported in the US, because AT&T are cocksuckers.

That's weird, I saw Josh do it a few months ago...

Seriously.

Fuck AT&T.

That shit would be so fuckin tight. What a fuckin tease.

btw

I've had my iPhone for 3 or 4 months now and i get at least one dropped call per day. I think I may have only had 3 dropped calls in my 3 or 4 years with T-Mobile. I think about jailbreaking my phone just to go back to T-Mobile.

When I left, it was like breaking up with a cool girlfriend.

They were trying to tell me that if I was sold on the iPhone that they offered service to iPhones and that I could just go to their site and download something for iPhones for use with t-mobile. It was very tempting. I chickened out.

*edit*

I found this interesting article about tethering with a jailboken iPhone on teh googles.

ehh, I had my iphone jailbroken but it was a real hassle to upgrade etc. The benefits from jailbraking are pretty minimal IMO, except for the video recorder app...

I'm thinking maybe his laptop picked up a wifi signal after he plugged it in or something. Strange.

MXTube which lets you save youtube vids right to the device in mp4 format

The ability to SSH into the device

Reading docs/pdfs on it

Customizing the look of it.

Ability to play cracked games on it lol not that anyone would ever do that oh no.

Ability to get off AT&T's network which is apparently not so shit hot?

etc etc etc

It's important to remember, you don't always have to have the latest iPhone OS. And also, jailbreaking allows you to get those OS upgrades without paying for them (which is bullshit, fucking 10 dollars for the ability to copy and paste, and i say that as a longtime apple user)

so if i can get out of my at&t contract and unlock it, who is the best provider to go with?

i think the guy i talked to that had unlocked his phone had t-mobile, but he has a pre-paid plan, and he couldn't get a data plan with that. he said it didn't really matter 'cause he could get wifi many places, but i am out camping or places where i cant get wifi alot

i dont know how much longer i'll be in the usa, so i dont want to sign another contract too

thats cool theres an app that lets you turn of background processes, i turned off push notifications, but am still having trouble with battery life

and to dl youtube videos, i didn't know that either - more reasons to jailbreak

if there is an app that would play .avi files - that would be the shit

if apple finds out you jailbreak or unlock the iPhone, does that void its warranty?

oh apple, what happened? i used to love you.

-Never had MXTube, but that sounds pretty cool.

-SSH was also nice but I only really used it to install apps/games and grab my videos from the video recorder which was a overcomplicated way of having to access my content.

-I look at PDFs and doc files on my restored iphone all the time, no need for jailbreaking to view those.

-The customization + the video recording are the best reasons to jailbreak IMO.

-All the cracked games suck.

-I live in a area where AT&T works fine.

-iPhone OS upgrades have all been free, it was the Ipod Touch upgrade that costs $9.95.

To be honest, after some time I used none of the hacks and cracked apps except for the video recorder and the SSH capability to get the videos I made. While the recorder was a nice feature, the video was pretty shitty. Let me take this opportunity to say, It is rather infuriating that my iphone is capable of recording (shitty) video, yet apple wants to make more money so they block any development of a video recorder since it would make the 3Gs less of a attraction. Fucking Apple. Love their products, yet I hate so many of their policies.

To get back on track, my main issue with Jailbreaking is the updates, it was too much of a hassle. I spent a full evening troubleshooting a bunch of BS the first time I upgraded my jailbroken phone and decided it wasn't worth it the second time around. I download a fair amount of apps and Its annoying when you can't get something you want because your OS is out of date. I restored my phone after OS 3.0 came out simply for the copy and paste feature, I was also looking forward to being able to add images to MMS messages but apple decided to be a bunch of Klingon cum-loving assholes and limit that function to the 3G and 3Gs.

What's the app that lets you read docs/pdfs on your phone? I liked having that feature.

I forgot that iPhone users didn't have to pay for upgrades.

Cracked games are great, Super Monkey Ball, Crash Bandicoot nitro and so on...

Sometimes Apple's iPhone/iPod touch policies are really infuriating.
