Oh God!

"I heard some cracking sounds, like Rice Crispies," said Mike Wong. "I didn't think much of it, but I kept hearing it, and then I started feeling a shake. I thought, 'You know what? I think that might be an earthquake."

The humanity!

"I'm shaking like a leaf ... the pool water was just going everywhere," said Jean Nelson in Indio, California, outside of Palm Springs.

Should've jumped in. Free wave machine!

I have some friends in LA right now, but from afar this all sounds very tame.

yeah this earth quake was lame, i was in the middle of a BBQ... hardly an interruption, it was kinda cool though, very calm long and wavy, about 30 - 45 seconds of a Jello like sensation.

This is the first time I've witnessed a breaking news story through Twitter feeds and my God, there are a lot of paranoid people in California. Infuriating knee-jerkers.

Maybe they shouldn't legalise weed. :flower:

According to the Web bot predictions , 10 more major earthquakes will occur in 2010.

according to my calculations one king of pop died in 2009

extrapolating from the previous rate of 0 deaths per king of pop in 2008

this means an infinite number of kings of pop will die in 2010

isn't extrapolating small datasets awesome?

i was sitting with my aunt and in the middle of the conversation i felt myself swaying but thought i was dizzy. she had a weird expression on her face and i saw a tree in front of her house sway and there was no wind. then she was like "was that me or did you feel that too?" then i felt another sway. it was a weird quake as i'm used to the more rumbling ones.

that was a prelude to the big one that will push california into the sea.

it will push it into the pacific sideways forming a land bridge from the US to China allowing chinese commie muslim socialist atheist gay terrorists to invade and team up with the latinos to destroy god-fearing peace-loving white middle-class americans everywhere

C'mon guys. It was a 7.2, which is huge; fortunately the rupture happened in a pretty unpopulated area around the border.

I felt it here in LA; if you're in some of the newest earthquake-friendly buildings, it can feel sort of intense-- they sway a lot longer than the actual earthquake itself. The building I was in at the time (the Annenberg Space for Photography, which is awesome) forced an evac even though everyone thought it was pretty minor. The reason was that the big one in MX seemed to have triggered a few smaller ones a few minutes later in CA. There was a 3.9 somewhere and a 4.0 or 4.1 or something in Malibu. So the evac was just a precaution in case those weren't just aftershocks.

Most people here aren't all that paranoid about earthquakes, but if you're not used to them they are a little upsetting. Just because some dipshits tweet about it or because some news source wants to make sensationalize yet another minor LA thing doesn't mean everyone is running around here pulling their fucking pubes out in a panic.

Also: fortunately this one didn't devastate a huge population or anything, but some of the pictures from Mexico show that it was big enough to severely fuck up individual, already poor, peoples' livelihoods, so basically, shut the fuck up, you twats.

I've only felt one since living in California, but it just made everything in the room look like jell-o. It was pretty cool.

While on acid.

Yeah. I quickly realised that I had named this thread inappropriately. I wanted to only focus on the escalated level of fear in LA, in which the earthquake seemed very sedate, and not the actual epicenter in Mexico.

Of course it's a hundred times more serious for anyone near the site in Mexico. I just wanted to laugh at manic Californians.
