Hello,

I've enjoyed bits of Jimmy Edgar's stuff before (not all of it.)

His new album will be called 'XXX', apparently.

I don't know... His whole approach gets on my nerves a little - his write up on myspace, the imagery, the track titles, the vocals and lyrics in the new preview tracks for the next album. Perhaps he has some sort of narcissistic personality disorder, or something. And music either is or isn't sexy. You don't force it to be sexy by smearing it with track titles and computer voices talking about being sexy.

That's cool... All for one and one for all. The threads link arms!

I really thought Jimmy Edgar could have turned into a cool artist. There were hints of sleezy electro brilliance in his old stuff, but it seems he's lost any sense of subtlety. And I'm no music expert - but the production in the new stuff isn't THAT great, is it?

No wonder Warp rejected it (did anyone read the angry blog post from Jimmy Edgar's "manager" about Warp's rejection at that time?)

Still, he seems to be doing well for himself, so I guess a bit of posturing doesn't hurt. I just thought and hoped he could turn into another great electronic arist, but it seems he wants to be a pop producer.

The tracks from XXX on his MySpace sound naively interesting, although I don't expect a tour de force comeback from him. In response to what other users said, his "I am sexy" attitude is so forced that I don't take him seriously anymore. The fact that he regularly DJs in New York City since he moved from Detroit has influenced his music, that's for sure (just see what happened to Machine Drum: he got over glitch-hop for a more urban/hipster style after moving to NYC. Jimmy and him both try too hard to please the local scene and stuff.) Also, you can't blame Jimmy to be overconfident about himself since he is a fashion photographer. :p

yes, but the fact that he used to fancy himself a "fashion designer" says volumes . . .

I love how shit-talking starts before people even HEAR the album.

I only liked 2-3 trax from Color Strip but I have high hopes for this album.

He still releases awesome stuff if you look for it...

Totally, I used to go to their shows all the time but they really cater to the hipster crowd in their DJ sets now so I don't really bother any more. Shame as they have a lot of talent at making weirder abstract stuff. Oh well. And when is Normrex records starting up? That has been in the works for like three years...

The shit talking started because of lots of things about the guy, including the tracks he put up from the new album.

But I'll admit that that "New Touch" track and video is amazing. I was going to mention it in my first post as an exception, but I forgot. But yeah... excellent track. Exactly the sort of progression from his past stuff I would have hoped for.

Shame he sprinkled the most cringe-worthy vocals and lyrics over the rest of the new album. There comes a point where, no matter how good the rest of a track is, you can't ignore the vocals and lyrics. He's crossed it, unfortunately.

I'll still buy XXX in spite of his narcissistic, self-obsessed writing and vocals, though, because there is some good stuff on there. When he's good he's really good - and nobody else sounds like him.

I borrowed some of your anecdotes concerning Jimmy Edgar and Machine Drum's new way of living in NYC for my post. :P

Normrex has always used the big talk technique, ie it never got anywhere despite their numerous announcements (except for the digital release of Want To 1 2 on iTunes, which is not really an accomplishment for a label).

Color Strip was really nice, yeah sure it was a bit like "yeah let's have sexy sex" in places, but there was enough good stuff on there to balance out the slightly cheesy moments.

This new stuff is just like "SEXY SEX. OOOOH SEXY SEXY BABY SEX YEAHHHHHH OOOOH YEAH HOT AND SEXY SEX"

If Beyonce, Lady Gaga or Fergie had any sense, their million dollar booties would have Jimmy Edgar on speed dial already.

That track featured on Warp20 is the only thing i like about him, but this guy really has a lot of confidence on him.
