seriously.

clint eastwood is a bad ass, but this film projects him into a godlike status as a screen actor. Ennio morricone absolutely killed the score. he essentially scored the western film persona circa 1966. the ecstasy of gold?? god damn

such an amazing movie and i have not seen it get enough love.

and this thread is spurred by a recent viewing of said film. maybe drunk.

god damn.

one of the few film scores that's so stylistically varied, and has so many distinct musical bits (not just variations on a couple of themes) it actually sounds like an album when you listen to it. the POWs' song works as a great centrepiece.

you can get it as a 2fer with The Big Gundown which is even sweeter

it's a brilliant movie.

i'm thinking about buying a vuvuzela and blasting through the entire movie just to see how much it can ruin the experience.

yeah this track and the increasingly frenzied editing that accompanies it in the film, as Tuco searches for the grave, is pretty much cinematic perfection.

That said my heart broke last time I tried to view this film. I bought the dvd but didn't notice it was a "Director's Cut" that restores some lost footage. Unfortunately, apparently there was no audio for this spliced-in footage so they got the actors to redub their parts, but they don't sound the same at all, which really messed up the feeling for me. When will people learn not to fuck with the classics? There was a reason Tuco hiring some mercenaries was left on the cutting room floor; it's unnecessary, boring, and doesn't add character development - I DON'T NEED TO SEE IT. Just like I didn't need to see Han Solo stepping on Jabba's tail, or the discovery of the spacecraft and pods in Aliens. I couldn't even finish it.

After Apocalypse Now, which literaly blew my head off the first time I watched it at 19. You know with the ghostly whooshing of the helicopter blades, the jungle exploding into fire and the first time I had ever heard The Doors The End (which as it would happen would be in my Dessert Island Discs), then TGTBATU would be number 2.

Totally fucking brilliant.
