  1. it's always been known that isis was the new name for al qaeda in iraq, which came into existence and rose to power in the wake of the 03 liberation https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamic_State_of_Iraq
  2. anyone watching pkd's electric dreams? saw a positive review on slashdot,
  3. yes. this cannot be overstated. we play into their hands, that way. russia's end game was to weaken america, and trump dispatching the national guard to quell unrest would make putin jizz, shit and piss himself with laughter. we have the internet, now. protesting is fine and great in some circumstances but we have vastly better mechanisms to effect results contacting your congress people and voting in the midterms is probably more important than protesting american government != mubarak dictatorship
  4. people think they're supposed to vote for their favorite tv show character
  5. fucking christ.. not like we didn't know they're staring at each other in the mirror but fucking ay.. We're in a fucking PKD novel lol
  6. i wonder if oprah thinks climate change is worthy of concern
  7. so i saw episode 8 and i'm surprised how much i liked it. rlm shit on it. it seemed like a military movie. its cool that the scope was kind of confined to the ship under siege. glad there were no death stars. fewer blatant nostalgia pulls. maybe some people miss those or care about what this does to the over-all story, but i think johnson's approach was to just make a solid movie using the star wars universe. it felt more like the first couple lotr movies than a new star wars movie. a lot of cool cinematography, and the action sequences were better than those in the last two. probably the best since the original trilogy, imo.
  8. when i learned that new horizons would find some kuiper belt object to check out after pluto, i figured it wouldn't likely happen to be a very close fly-by. with the recent announcements about how it will be new years day 2019, i looked into how close the fly-by will be, and it will be 3 times closer than the fly-by with pluto! the photos from the fly-by with pluto are some of the best space photos. hype
  9. some very interesting bits of info from the mueller investigation were apparently given to the NYT today https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/04/us/politics/trump-sessions-russia-mcgahn.html
  10. should i see the new star wars with my dad to make him happy, even though i didnt enjoy the last 2 star wars movies? i dont really want to but if someone convinces me i might kind of enjoy it then i will
  11. it goes by state. DC has a one-party consent law. in many states it is illegal to record a conversation without informing the other parties.
  12. USD money supply is about $14 trillion (going by M2, a decent measure of money supply). That means the "market cap" of USD is about 14 trillion. BTC has been around $250 billion in market cap. 14000000000 / 250000000 = 56 there's one fifty-sixth as much money in BTC as there is in USD. almost 2 percent that's enormous for a home-made currency that has major technical obstacles to scalability. i think major gains from its current value will be slow. regarding the other cryptos, it seems likely that some better designed coins will soon supplant BTC. the question is, what is the fate of cryptos? what purpose do they really serve? all the talk of "cryptography" falls flat on my ears. any webpage that is https is encrypted. hyping encryption as though it's a virtue is dumb. of course it's encrypted. i think the core value of cryptos will remain their black market significance for a while. the coin that wins out will be the one that keeps the criminals anonymous and happy. the only really significant value i can detect in cryptos, aside from that, is the appeal of bypassing the "establishment" and having a currency with a money supply that isn't determined by a government. i could see a crypto catching on generally. would be interested to hear people talk of the virtues of the different coins' tech.
