  2. I did a bit of research on the North Korean leadership and found these very interesting peices... Anyone whose even slightly interested in this conflict may want to give a read. Brian Reynolds Myers, an academic expert on NK and journalist/author goes into depth about the extent of the propaganda that this society is inficted with throughout their lives (to the point where the average citizen is completely brainwashed to believe that North Koreans are some kind of superior race). He goes on to say that the current NK regime is not even really communist as much as it is simply fascist/ultra-nationalistic. Mindblowing, and truly sad. Though it's only one source, I do believe it's a decent one and he seems to have a very experienced/authoritative voice on the matter... http://www.3quarksdaily.com/3quarksdaily/2010/04/immersion-in-propaganda-racebased-nationalism-and-the-unfigureoutable-vortex-of-juche-thought-colin-.html This goes more into detail regarding the complexity of NK's propaganda tactics (which are purposely constructed into this sort of ideology ("juche")- in which translated versions come off as so cumbersome that non-North Koreans have trouble penetrating it, thus allowing the NK leadership to try and hide it's real intentions from the outside world. Sadly, the typical North Koreans don't have clear view of what is going on outside of their society... http://www.washingtonian.com/blogs/dead_drop/north-korea/juche-strong-new-documentary-peels-back-the-layers-of-north-koreas-propaganda-machine.php I had no idea the extent of this madness... Before reading/hearing about some of this today, like chen, i also had a skeptical voice somewhere in my head hypothesizing, "hmmm maybe the west is painting nk situation as worse than it is"... I think this information quashes most of that skeptical voice.
  3. damn...just now.. http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5i_rmAvypzoveMWSivdq-VJnE0KLQ?docId=CNG.8d413e4089153d445404cf346d191280.811
  4. Can anyone recommend any current or recent deep house artists/labels doing non techy/digital sounding (or atleast not super techy) stuff? ive heard stuff from the label pure, and it's pretty blissful and smooth as far as production but in general i still havent been able to find releases that match the energy, soulfulness & vibrancy of stuff from the early to mid/mid-late 2000's (like hed kandi beach house/miguel migs/mark farina type stuff... that sunshiny stuff.. so much of the new stuff is either purposely 80s/electro sounding or dark, melancholic, synthetic, and kind of introspective feeling if you know what i mean? im also looking for fresh 4 to the floor house, just good funky/soulful/uplifting house - in the vein of eric prydz, cabin crew, modjo etc .. maybe even progressive 2000's ibiza stuff like deep dish, watkins.. or the more recent daddys groove & little mark track ... anyone putting out stuff like this anymore? or am i straight up living in the past? :/
  5. countries with the most power, money, resources and control are not root cause of all negative world events involving power, money, resources and control. to blame everything on the "powers that be" is childish oversimplification. it's also about human nature, intent, will, ethics and morality. the united states/the west/capitalism is often the target of world ills involving war, destruction, poverty, etc. what i think people forget is that power is relative. If india, nigeria, pakistan, japan, iceland or any other country on earth was the leading world super power with the kind of "by default responsibility" to ethically, morally, financially and politically moderate the workings of the planet (like the U.S. is expected to), they would find themselves in a very similar scenario as far as being blamed for the world's ills. The U.S. is <fill in the blank with imperialist jargon> compared to what model? What other reigning super power? Nothing wrong with criticizing wrongs and we have done plenty wrong, but this "imperialist" nonsense is generalizing, divisive and foolish. I think the overall intentions of the United States and what it's founding fathers stood for, and what we still try to preserve to this day is quite decent. I can't even begin to imagine what the world would be like if the superpower torch was in the hands of say, Saudi Arabia.
  6. Fair enough.. I would agree that trying to at least find some common ground to avoid any further escalation may be constructive, and I would like to think there could be hope there, but I also can't help but imagine the US gov't would probably hesitate to have any kinds of dealings with a leader who openly declares war upon the United States, and "aiming" their warheads of our civilian populations. I'm also no expert here, and maybe the guy is just throwing fists in the air because he knows everyone's against him. Not sure what the answer is really.. Maybe Dennis Rodman was a co-vert operative (which would have been awesome), and maybe he'll get invited back so he can find out more about Un and his central base, and help take him out and thwart their nuclear development. That would be rad. I don't know that I'd call it childish.. but rather a testament to the fact that the administration takes other nations' war threats seriously.
  7. i believe this kind of mindset about the intentions of the US government is a bit of an oversimplification and verges on being ignorant and divisive in the same kind of way that all Amerrrican armchair generals like to throw all the axis of evil nations in a pool and label them "freedom-hating". i think people are multi-faceted and dynamic, even government workers (i know that's so hard for conflict theorists to believe). i believe that in addition to actions, that it's a leaderships intent, mission statements, core values and beliefs that also count in international relations. in this case of NK, it is clear from the perspective of almost every other nation, that the NK leadership is hellbent on purposely taking out innocent lives. How is one to sit down and "talk" with a leadership like that on "their terms"? I do believe that dialogue and diplomacy can be constructive in some of the most complicated settings. However, when it comes to a leadership that is clearly set on genocide, it involves a mental (not political issue). I can't ever imagine sitting down and "talking" with David Duke (which is why human progress and social concern-valuing society members rightfully pass him off as irrelevent/unreasonable), or Osama Bin Laden (which is why we rightfully went after him). There comes a point where diplomacy does not work. I'm not sure that a dictator who imprisoned and tortures his people is simply just going to "stop all that nonsense" if we lifted sanctions the same way hamas probably isnt going to stop wanting to push israel into the sea and murdering jews if the israeli govt just handed over land or stopped building settlements... same way an unnamed german dictator wasn't going to just stop committing genocide if his economy had just improved.
  8. One of the first house tracks to use Speak n Spell... Early Chicago house stuff.. I could definitely imagine how this must have unfluenced Daft Punk and other Acid House/Filtered acts through out the 90's/2000's. http://youtu.be/WExOtiiZdgM
  9. I fell asleep while listening for the first time to Oversteps, and had a similar experience. It was so interesting, alien, weird, bizarre. But the feeling had an overwhelming darkness, coldness, and emptiness to it that I just couldn't fall asleep peacefully to. Had to turn it off. I think it had much to do with the lack of any rhythm or any real melody structures and the fact that's so non-human sounding. It's atonality and choas actually freaked the hell out of me haha. I think Exai would be a less disturbing album to sleep to.

Those Yellow Note releases are very chill and cool-- kinda liquidy. I highly recommend. I will post photos soon and send any more info I can put together of the rest of the collection (that's only like 1/8 of it)
  11. When I have a moment, I'll upload some photos of some of that vinyl. What was fun was using the discogs site to figure out what those promos and test pressings were by the catalog numbers on the runout grooves. Some I haven't even found. Like one of the Jungle Sky test pressings are a catalog number that I can't find anywhere. There's also a white label promo that's mislabled as Cherry Tree or something and it turns out that it's a Morcheeba promo. All kinds of cool stuff in there.
  12. I bought a crate of records from my friend who got it at a swap meet for like 10 bucks. He had no idea what was in there.Turns out it was part of DJ Soul Slinger's (Liquid Sky/Jungle Sky Records) personal collection of vinyl. Tons of early-late 90's UK dnb, jungle stuff.. incl test pressings, promos, and even acetates. That's where I found my Hangable Autobulb 1 as well as an Autechre LP, some Warp compilation (Elektroworld, i think)... photek, the orb, dj krush, panasonic (pan sonic), etc etc- buncha rare stuff. I even found Afrika Bambaataa - Fire (Soul Slinger remix) original acetate. Anyway, i tracked down the poor dude, and emailed him about the records, and he said he lost them while here in Phoenix, and that I should look after them until he comes back. It's been 2 years. No word. They sit in a crate in my room. If he does come back, I really hope he lets me keep his HAB 1.. maybe even the Zend Avista or Rude 66 or..Dj Spooky/Tim Plotkin promo sampler... fuck there's so much cool shit in there it blows my mind. i just had to get this off my chest to people who would care about such cool records haha.
  13. Been on a Black Dog tip.. Further Vexations & Spanners on headphones all day in the office... Just came across this today, which I'm excited about: <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/8cLgSQw5Bng?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Anyone discovered this already? Love that f*cking noise interweaving through out.
  14. Okay, so is "Grey Stripe" the saw 2 track that you speak of that's in this trailer? The windy sounding one.. Right there toward the beginning of the trailer right? At least, thats what im hearing, but still hard to tell. Btw, just recently watched this movie (Cthulu) after seeing this post and thought it was fantastic.. Pretty creepy. I recommend it to all ya'll.
  15. Maybe just to f*ck with people. No other reason. Create dialogue. Mystery. ...Conversations like this. Then again, maybe he was telling the truth. We'll probably never know for sure (;
