  1. I like to have one or two standby reverbs (right now BAM in hardware and VVV in software) that almost everything in a mix will get at least a tiny amount of t glue things together, and then a whole lot of (mostly cheap or unnatural sounding) other options for individual tracks. Yeah, I tend to throw an Ableton reverb towards the end of the line, but often don't mix it fully across everything, depending on the track. I've been putting some shitty Alesis mixer reverb over drums lately, along with feeding various things through my Quadraverb. A friend of mine has the Big Sky which is often too much for my tastes, though it is a quality reverb no doubt. He also got this Earthquaker Devices Avalanche Run pedal recently and it is much more pleasing to my ears. Very interesting pedal. If it had MIDI control, I'd have already bought one. Someone here or on Gearslutz was talking about the Zoom MS-70CDR and I looked it up the other day, seems like a solid pedal for the money. I've been a long time fan of Zoom though, so I may be a touch biased towards their sound. I have that Zoom but haven't used it with a synth yet. The things that suck about it are that tweaking parameters is kind of a pain and I don't think it is true bypass. The only way I can figure to bypass effects is to hold the pedal for a few seconds to get to the tuner section. Still, your going through a buffer. On the other hand, I have never seen a single pedal that gives you so many opportunities to mess with sound. You can stack up to 6 effects on top of each other, so I imagine you can get some insanely gnarly sounds out of it. It can get my guitar sounding brown as fuck.

  5. Metal! Was the first thing I checked after I had an initial freakout. The first time I turned it on all of the lights came on and the screen was blank and there was no sound coming out. I was distressed, to put it mildly. But some googling turned up many forum posts about people having the same problem when they update to the latest firmware (I had asked the seller to do this before shipping it). I just re-updated it and it has been copacetic since.
  6. If you are on a budget (granted, it's not that cheap, but cheaper than a real piano) and don't mind digital, I would highly recommend a Casio Ps5x. Had one for a couple years to teach myself piano and regrettably sold it. Probably one of the pieces of gear I miss the most. The grand piano sounds amazing, and the other presets + midi and relatively deep synthesis made it a great all 'rounder.
  7. What didn't you like about the BSII? I want something like this in the near-to-medium future but I'm not sure whether I want that, an MS20 mini, a Minilogue, or an Evolver. I have a Microbrute but I want something with just a little bit more to play with and potentially patch memory. I would probably keep the 'brute around, though - I love its ratty, SID-ish vibes. The only other monosynth I have is a Shruthi-1 which is fuzzy and squirmy and has a digital filter which is often a bit too gritty. I can't really say, other than I just eventually stopped using it. I think, in the sound department, it just never got quite there for me. I actually used the microbrute a lot more when I had it. It definitely has it's own sound. The BSII is a great synth though, and the resale value will most likely stay the same or increase in the future, so I doubt that you would regret buying one! No, I believe the cutoff potentiometer was a plastic shaft surface mount potentiometer on the earlier board revisions, and was prone to breaking, or becoming otherwise faulty. The newer versions are through-hole, metal shaft potentiometers: Ah, thanks. I will definitely have a looksee when it arrives.

  9. Just bought a used Sub 37 for $1,100.00 It'l be my third analog mono after a BSII (recently sold) and a Minibrute. I plan on keeping this one, but that's what I always say...
  10. The album has grown on me in a tremendous way. I was disappointed to the point of being distraught when I first heard it. I've probably only listened to it in full a handful of times, but each listen brings out new subtle details. Listened again today on a long walk, and decided that I love this album.
  11. I can sort of understand that producer. I generally love the music I'm making while making it, and for a few days afterwords, then I absolutely hate it, then maybe after 6 months...I either like it again or wish I never gave it out or uploaded it. Weirdly, after many years, even the stuff that I thought was absolute shit sounds good again. I love listening to the psych rock and punk I made way back in the day, but I practically disowned most of it for a long while.
  12. No, completely understandable. Actually, using the sp to make tracks has made me bang my head against walls many times. Imo the best thing to use it for is to sample random crap into it and mangle it to oblivion. The greatest strength is its sample time. You can fart into the mic, use some delayzs, reverbs, bit reduction, and make an evolving pad out of it with resampling. Other than that, and being an fx box, it's pretty limited.
  13. My sp-404 is, and will probably always be, my favorite piece of gear. Very MPC-ish excluding the sequencing (the sequencer is a joke, it's all about resampling). If you want to dip a toe into the MPC world, I would highly suggest it. It's also an amazing fx box. Although for a little bit more money you could get the real deal.
  14. Yep shouldn't be a problem. Note however that the PO-series don't respond to start/stop messages, so they will be in sync tempo-wise but you'll still have to hit play manually. It's slightly better than just syncing it by ear but it's almost not worth the extra cabling. Yep, it worked. Just jammed out for an hour. I have no clue how I would use this setup (I don't play live right now), but it's a lot of fun. I think the next thing I need is a multi-channel audio interface so I can at least record the 3 machines on different tracks simultaneously. Anyone got any recs?
  15. Oh shit, that's what I meant was to clock them. I just want to have everything at the same bpm. If THAT can't be done, I might just sell the er-1 (could sell it for exactly what I bought it for or more). I'm thinking that if I can to er-1 > volca > po-32, that should work. I'm pretty inexperienced with midi/syncing shit.
  16. I've never really used drum machines, but recently came across a cheap Korg ER-1 and decided to buy it. Anyone got any tips/tricks for this little box? Just messing around for an hour, I've managed to get some pretty cool sounds out of it. I'm thinking of having it sequence my Volca keys and PO-32.
  17. Scary in the way I would have totally been into in high school Yesh! I think Ellen Burstyn gives maybe the best performance I've ever seen in any film. Made my friend cry the first time he saw it.
