If you're interested in this you should read Kim Stanley Robinson's book "Red Mars" (and followups), an very well written novel about the colonization/settlement of Mars Oh I've red the trilogy, and the book with short stories (the baseball one is fun!)

been meaning to get my hands on some of his stuff. where to start? I've been reading just the travelogues, but from there I'd start from Shenzhen and work chronologically from there, because he sometimes references back to his older work and you can see him developing over time. Though Shenzhen is a bit more boring than the rest in my opinion, so if you like you could skip straight to Pyongyang where the stuff gets more interesting. Oh they are really easy to get here (since he's from Quebec), but those books are awesome indeed in those sort of travel journal story that makes you smile/think. I guess in Europe perhaps the FNAC but they won't be translated...

I think we all have done that! There is no other way. It's a good book (a little too long and redundant perhaps), but I really do think there is a fiction aspect to it.

Fall of Hyperion next?

I just didn't like most of them. Meta or not, I didn't care about the stories. A couple were awesome though...

I'm a big fan of unfinished novels. They act on a second level. Have you read The Original of Laura? It's like the same. Fragment's of a genius mind at the end of their tormented last years of life.

I got to get into Ballard more... just read Empire of the Sun, but I have a Concrete Island and High Rise in my collection. Isn't that novel some sort of mini-books thing?

Yeah it's my fave of his. It's the kind of book you'll read each decade of your life.

I gotta get into some Hemingway... did back two decade ago but it's been a long time. I'm hoping something like Library of America get his work out, anthologies of his work in nice hardcover books.
