EPIC FAIL

A TEENAGE girl attempting to sail solo around the world has had to turn back less than 24 hours into the voyage after running into a bulk carrier.

Jessica Watson, 16, set sail on Ella's Pink Lady from Queensland's Sunshine Coast yesterday morning after more than a year of preparation.

The Sunshine Coast schoolgirl was attempting become the youngest person to sail solo, non-stop and unassisted around the world.

A spokesman for the Australian Maritime Safety Authority said her yacht collided with a bulk carrier shortly before 2.30am, about 15 nautical miles due east of Point Lookout, on North Stradbroke Island.

"The bulk carrier is believed to be heading north up the east coast and has allegedly failed to stop," said the spokesman.

"She has contacted her parents who in turn called AMSA. She advised that her boat had suffered quite a bit of damage to the vessel and the mast but she herself is OK."

Jessica has now started her motor, and is heading back to shore under engine power and should be there in the next few hours.

Water police are on standby to provide assistance and the Australian Transport Safety Bureau is expected to conduct an investigation into the crash.

i would be pretty cool though, getting to do that as a teen. until you get boarded and raped by pirates and get aids.

would still be pretty cool for the pirates

what's the australian equivalent of child protective services?

heh ... that's what everyone here has been saying .. just imagine the mud being thrown at the parents by the media if this kid had actually died along the way ... there's a fine line between the national pride bS and the wtf are you doing bS ...

-----

plus as to her claim that the BULK CARRIER failed to stop .. oh come on .. you're on a little manoeuvrable skip .. and these guys ten stories up are on a vessel that takes kilometres to turn .. sailing in a clearly defined shipping lane .. i would hate to have seen what happened to her if she sailed not around the world but just across the english channel (busiest shipping corridor in the world) ... she would have been creamed ...

clearly seems like a little princess idiot ....

of course it's early days for news ... and what is initially reported isn't always the clearest picture of the events ... so i'll reserve judgement before i go on a greater tirade ...

Sexy and ready to go.

Oh look at the giant globe affixed to the yacht .. no doubt to help her find her way on her journey as she likely can't read nautical charts .. (i wouldn't be surprised .. even if it is a prop for those visiting pre-launch) ...
