What is the socially acceptable time to wait before replying? I feel that if I reply right away I come off as too eager to talk, and I creep the other person out. I feel as if I wait an hour or more, I come off as pretentious and holier than thou or the person thinks I'm away from the phone.

Why should you care what they think? Why would they even care if you wrote straight back? I try and answer asap to keep on top of things.

The WATMM standard for text messaging is a 10 minute delay for responses.

  • If your response invites more unwanted responses, add 10 minutes to your delay, each time you respond, until you reach a 60 minutes delay. Once 60 minutes is reach you're allowed to ignore future messages until the next day, where you will explain that you fell asleep.
  • If all responses are wanted, you may alternate between 5 -10 minute delays for up to 60 mins. After 60, you must perform one 30 minute delayed response which you must preface with "Oops, fell asleeeep...gah" or "sorry pooping." Then you can restart the 10 minute delay rule.

They texted you first. Why wouldn't they expect a quick reply? In a face-to-face conversation I don't recall ever being bothered by a speedy reply.

Also, when talking face-to-face with someone do you wait five minutes after they ask you the question? What's with this waiting bullshit? Granted, you may be unable to do so immediately, but I'm assuming an ideal situation for communication.

Is it, like, a mate, or is it, like AN ATTRACTIVE MEMBER OF YOUR PREFERRED GENDER THAT YOU, LIKE, LIIIIIIIIIIIIKE?!??!?!

If the former, reply back immediately. If the latter, divide the coefficient of the quantitative compatibility ratio by the inverse of the length of time you have known them minus the differential between your standard attractiveness ratio. Text back after this number of minutes and you will be dating within the year.

People are pretty odd like that.

i text back when i realize i've gotten a message. fortunately for me, the time it takes me to realize i've gotten a fucking text can vary from a few seconds to days. i generally don't give a fuck, though i like being timely. if i had anything real to say i'd call anyways.

45 - 60 minutes if it's my girlfriend as otherwise she'll reply straight away and I'll be trapped into doing that shit all fucking day.

10 minutes for everyone else, even people I dislike.

when you text someone, how long do you want to wait for the reply? that amount of time is the answer to your question.

i would generally follow this rule. i have a regular phone so i don't text all that often
