Somewhat. It involves cultures, milk and in most cases long aging processes which is probably why its so goddamn expensive, because it takes like a year or more to churn out a brick of cheese.

I'm guessing you live in America? A lot of good cheese is imported and is thus expensive. When I lived in Europe I actually found the prices of good cheeses (your stiltons, roqueforts, emmentals, etc.) to be quite reasonable.

Cheese/Dairy is expensive in Canada because of duties imposed to "protect" the diary farmers of Canada. This allows Canadian dairy farmers to basically set price points willy-nilly, while production costs have largely remained the same due to improvements in efficiency.

canada here. ive been to the states though and its the same story. im not looking for some swanky ass mouldy cheese thats been sitting on a pile of elephant manuwer for the last seven years, i just want a brick of mozza, and then to be left alone

gas prices for one. importing it is expensive, especially in that most cheeses need refrigerated containers.

never even thought of that. so its related to gas prices and gas prices are kept high as a means to keep society in a state of struggle, so it is a conspiracy! the whole refrigerator thing doesnt seem like a big deal though, they bring in milk and frozen shit and ice cream and every thing else frozen, lugging around some cheese, and not even that much in terms of mass, doesnt seem like a big obstacle to me

not to mention that when you buy a brick of normal cheese, over 30% or something isnt even cheese

-tedious manufacturing process

-because they can

-gas

i know little about the dairy industry, but if this is true...how fucking stupid. so all the people who arent cheese farmers (99.9% of people) have to pay up the ass for a block of cheese to protect this relatively tiny industry?

edit: see there is a cheese conspiracy

It has very little to do with gas prices (which are largely controlled by nations who have no interest in dairy production whatsoever) and everything to do with protectionist tariffs.

The only way to get rid of protectionist tariffs though is to...participate in the global economy. And you know what that means...Maggie Thatcher shapeshifting Reagan lizard people!

aside: there needs to be technology that can figure out when you've read a sentence (eye-tracking) and then play an embedded sound effect. Like after global economy the standard three orchestra hits for dramatic effect (duh duh duh) would have been perfect.

So much cheese in Oregon.

man. rogue has a creamery? Whats it take to work for those guys

The Rogue Creamery isn't related to the beer.

The Rogue River is down here, so everything is Rogue (Rogue Cleaners, Rogue Ski Shop, Rogue Community College, etc.).

Well, either Rogue or Caveman.

Edit: I might be wrong. Rogue Ale does link the Rogue Creamery in the food section of their web site.

I edited my post. I think they are related - according to their web site.

so whats stopping me from starting my own cheese company and selling the same cheese to the people for half the price?

Besides a large capital outlay for dairy production facilities? Probably all kinds of regulations and policies. Dunno enough about it to tell you.
