In your opinion,

what would you say is the best video game of this generation thus far?

(Example: MGS4, Gears of War 2, Uncharted 2, Infamous, God of war III, Mass Effect 2)

if i had to choose only one of all the games i've played this generation, the one that's left the biggest lasting impression on me is bioshock.

I haven't played Mass Effect 2, Dragon Age, Bioshock 2, Just Cause 2 yet. Having said that, I'd have to say it's a tie between Portal and Fallout 3 for me. Portal was flawless but limited in scope; Fallout 3 had shortcomings but was sprawling and ambitious.

One time I got so bored I made a list, I limited myself to only one game per franchise otherwise quite a few would be up here more then once.

Tad bit of background. I like games for the experience, and not the challenge. I'd much rather immerse myself in a game, enjoy a beer, and escape reality for a bit instead of frustrating myself or trophy/achievement whoring. I work in far too mind straining of a job to come home for punishment when I put a game in. Also a lot of the games I tend to like, my friends claim are too complex for them to get into, even tho I'm not into stuff like SRPG's or strict puzzle games. I'm also past my Quake and Doom 3 Arena days so FPS multiplayer means very little to me.

1) MGS4

Truely a master piece on all levels. Story telling and game play perfectly hand in hand with still some of the best graphics yet on any system. Quirky easter eggs and the ability the approach each section of a level as your own playground to set up traps and trick the enemy, some of the most fun I ever had messing around with people before.

2) God Of War 3

This entire franchise is pure sex. At some crebral level its just a series of platformerish puzzles spread between some of the most satasfying combat ever created, but fuck it, these games have always been pure sex to me.

3) Mass Effect

This one perfectly rubs my RPG style brain while incorporating solid shooting mechanics. I played through the first game about 6 times if that means anything. Completed the second and want to play it through a few more times after I'm done with some certain life issues atm. The style is kinda this sexy space oddessy with some old film grain which really adds a feeling of depth and style. This is like an adult version of every sci fi show/movie that ever disappointed me. I love how I don't really have to think while doing conversation trees so I can just watch the game unfold like a movie.

4) Ratchet and Clank Future

Solid platforming action mixed with the joy of getting ridiculous weapons and destroying enemies with them. Nothing like creating a disco ball to make all the enemies start dancing, turn them into sheeps mid dance, and then lighting them all on fire. Crack in Time was the first and only title i 100%'d with a platinum trophy.

5) Persona 4

There was no way I would have bought this unless it went on sale for 20 bucks and won so many awards. Impulse buy that ended up stealing 120 hours of my life on the first playthrough. This was that JRPG I always wanted. Solid leveling/grinding/turn based RPG goodness. The I found the jap-teen style of music and story charming as well. The little animated icons above peoples head that they use to show emotions is adorable. This came out long after the PS3 came out and I can play it on the 60 gig.

6) Dynasty Warriors

I missed out on the PS2 days so the first Dynasty Warriors I ever played was 6. For someone like me who has a hardcore think tank style work week, there is nothing better then coming home and mindlessly chopping down a thousand people with some ninja god/goddess you created. I managed to work my way through every single characters story, dabbled with Empires, and will probably get strikeforce eventually. Don't let the low scores fool you, this is mostly because these games are pretty repetitive, but for someone new coming into the franchise, you will most likely love it if you want to chop, chop, chop, chop, chop, chop, etc ok?

7) Bionic Command: Rearmed

Mix the BEST game soundtrack in the world with solid platforming action in HD and this is what you get. If you get pro at this game you can run through it in about 3 hours, so its that perfect game to pick up if you don't want a commitment. I lost count how many times I play this game. Also its probably the best implementation of co-op play I've seen. The screen goes from split screen to full script depending upon how far away you are from your buddy. This also allows you to finish a level if your friend is inadequate with his grappling hook. I can't believe they are making part 2, score. I wish more games were 2D HD.

8) Infamous

This is another one that was basically proof by numbers. Logged countless hours messing around in this one. If you play a good guy first who is terrified of killing people by accident then finally switch to a bad guy, its like how Force Unleashed should have been. Picking up groups of cars and chucking them at civilians while everything is exploding around you, very satisfying. You can play through the main story of this one, and its incredible, or you can really dive deep and explore every dead drop and the story just keeps getting better. I can't wait for Infamous 2.

9) Borderlands

If you were anything like me and came off a junkie spree in WOW this game scratched that grinding/leveling/loot itch better then anything else did for me. Easily the game I played the most in 2009. Its a shame I never really had a chance to co-op with anyone with this one for more then a few days. I had tons of fun reguardless.

10) Final Fantasy 13

Sure it starts off slow but by about hour 20 you don't remember why you initially had a problem with this one, because you find yourself in the middle of one of the most satisfying and complex combat systems ever made by a final fantasy game. Graphics and sound were easily the best in series. Story is about average with everything else, but the simple fact that you don't have to play as a whiny pre teen is the best part. Fuck Cloud. Fuck Squal. Fuck Tidus. Fuck Vaan. Seriously... fuck them in the ass. This game was murdered by reviewers and for no good reason. By Chapter 11 the game finally opens up to you like FFX, contains some of the most epic FF battles ever.

Stalker: Call of Pripyat is the one I've enjoyed the most. (Don't know anything about consoles.)

disgusting lack of Half Life 2 in this thread

that's my vote

Half Life 2 is amazing, was one of my favorite games for a long time.

And I was completely obsessed with Garry's Mod.

But It's kinda hard to say if Half Life 2 is a current-gen game,

because it was released back when PS2 & Xbox were king.

PC gaming is a completely different thing than console gaming.

And sorry but I don't see the Half-Life series or Counter-Strike as a console series,

despite it's console ports. I personally think HL & CS should remain for PC, console ports are lame.

Games like God of War, Resident Evil, Uncharted & Metal Gear Solid should remain on consoles,

And games like Half Life & Counter strike should remain on PC.

That's just my opinion...
