alls i know about sushi is the stuff i can get at the supermarket... what are the best varieties to eat

had a spicy roll yesterday: tuna, shrimp and salmon with orange sauce drizzled on top, 'twas good

before this i used to only get california roll but i'm really starting to develop a taste for other varieties

don't buy your sushi in the supermarket, that's my best advice.

be adventurous and eat it no matter how weird it looks, it's probably really good

my dad and my sister used to make sushi every friday night. they took classes, got all sorts of specialized gizmos and bamboo mats to roll seaweed. i very much appreciated the in-depth, fiddly nature of it. too bad i've never liked sushi. yuck

they usually used tuna/salmon, or made california rolls. i absolutely hate the smell of rice vinegar

First off, you're talking about maki.

Maki = rolls

Sushi = sashimi on rice

Sashimi = raw fish on its own

My favourite is Uni, which is a sea urchin that is wrapped in seaweed only. Looks like a dog turd.

We have many authentic Japanese restaurants where I live, well around where we live. Kind of pricey, but the food beats the shit out of those all you can eat sushi places that are white-washed.

Sushi is my favorite but I'm trying to avoid seafood at the moment for a whole mess of reasons nobody wants to hear about.

I try to pass this off on people that eat a ton of sushi: http://www.montereybayaquarium.org/cr/cr_seafoodwatch/sfw_recommendations.aspx?c=ln

Just so, you know, they can make informed sustainability decisions. It doesn't work, usually, but whatever.

When I say a lot of sushi, I mean like once a day. I know these people. LA is weird.

Advice: go to the nicest sushi place you can afford, preferably someplace with a 3:1 Japanese to Non-Japanese Patron Ratio. It makes a difference, trust. Those buffet/chain places are grody to the max, like, gag me with a spoon oh my gooooood.

Eel is really really good but it is kinda for pussies because it is usually already cooked.

I've always loved sushi.

My jam is yellowtail sushi or yellowtail/scallion maki.

I also like fresh salmon and salmon/avocado a lot.

Other faves are:

Raw oyster sushi

Spider roll (deep fried soft shell crab)

Ikura maki (salmon roe)

Tamago (sweet egg... Good for vegetarians)

Toro (tuna belly)

Mackerel (when it is really fresh)

I'll basically eat the shit out of any sushi though, really.

Sounds like someone hasn't had real Chinese food, which is basically like, let's bury this egg in a pile of excrement for 6 months until it petrifies and then grind up some tiger penis as a garnish and then put little pieces of gelatinized something or other on top for your health.
