Geeky stuff that makes you feel like Neo

What have you done lately, that's geeky (tech stuff mostly), that has worked out and makes you feel fucking awesome?

I just dug out one of my older WirelessN routers and have just successfully flashed a 3rd party firmware on it (dd-wrt) and set it up as a wireless repeater, to increase the WiFi range in my house (we have a supporting wall that acts like a fucking lead wall).

Regale us with your awesomeness.

Back in the day I would wear ethernet cable as a belt to school... while in such attire, I would be in my computer programming class and make super-nintendo quality rpgs. I recreated the Final Fantasy 6 battle system with working animations and everything. I wish I wish I wish I still had it. And here is the punch line: I did the RPGs in Visual Basic. lol.

EDIT: my appologies, I just remembered that you said "lately" in your post. lol

I got intoxicated and made a lot of spoons disappear. now there really is no spoon. I cannot find a spoon. but then I realised that this doesn't matter, because it's just the Matrix. so I ate my cereal with my hands today, and a straw. i'm fucking awesome.

I've been lazy with MIDI for years, but a couple of weeks ago I had a serious breakthrough in how to connect several devices and having them interact with each other properly. When I got to a point where everything was fired up and all the machines started playing back together and I understood how and why, I did indeed have that Neo moment.

Unfortunately, no one can be told what MIDI is. You have to work it out for yourself.

-cracking wifi WEP keys.

-home VPN + DDNS on my router, accessing all my computers at home from anywhere in the world.

-full encryption on my laptop and laughing at customs officers when they open it.

-writing a bash script to vote rig a contest at uni in my favor.

all pretty basic stuff,

but having an ungodly/borderline magical amount of skillz compared to your housemates,

like logging into my computers webcam and viewing them at home and telling them to get out of my room is pretty funny.

that and rooting all their computers without their knowledge.

i control everything, I'm like Daedalus/Icarus/Helios in Deus Ex

Oscillik,do you have a whole cupboard full of old electronic gear?

I do tend to hoard electronic/computer stuff, they usually come in handy somewhere along the line.

I've got DDNS and VNC set up on all the computers in the house, along with my family members and friends computers, so I can do remote stuff without fucking around with Microsoft Remote Assistance.

even have it all set up on my phone and tablet, so can tinker while away from home.

I was struggling to get a data set in the right format in R all day at work, and then the next day I woke up having somehow solved it in my sleep. I wrote a line of code in my sleep. Don't tell me that's not awesome.

Yes! I usually have those dreams in the morning right before waking up, or during my snooze sessions.

I don't think the revelation you had in the morning is that idm. If you actually dreamt that you accessed your inner terminal console and saw your hands typing on e keyboard lucid-dreaming style, okay, that's idm. But it's fairly frequent. There are even methods, that try to overcome this (pomodoro for instance). On top of my little experience, I want to say the more obscure the language (I heard R is) the more obscure/stupid the bug is (and your bug looks like it is), then the longer the pause. I used to know a guy who was into hacking challenges. He wasn't a hacker himself but he dug the idea inspecting code and finding breeches. He was bright enough to complete the challenges and reach the last level. The last one was very though. He spent countless hours on it then finally, gave up. Two month afterwards, the guy is hiking in the woods or somewhere when zing ! The answer strikes down on his mind. He had'nt read the source for two month, he didn't?t even had it on him, yet he fucking solved the problem.

Besides: I got somehow hooked up to Modern Combat (CoD for iPad). The level of cheaters is incredibly high. There are games where most of players cheat. This is extremely frustrating. I eventually end up starting coding a ruby script meant invade their iOS before injecting some kind of program that'd prevent them from.playing online.

Unfortunately I don't have the balls to infect thousands of machines (they have jail broken their iDevice and I'm pret sure most of them left the default password). So I guess I'll keep shooting at everything and anything, just like Rambo, and spit on the ground the roll on it when smartcoco1999 kills me for the 20th time before disappearing as fast as a bunny in the distance, finally becoming a red dot on a red background.

blah blah
I read all of that and it didn't mean anything; it is awesome to solve programming problems in your sleep and you know it
