  1. There's always a bunch of fruitcakes with some "alternative ideas". Sometimes it's better that way. And sometimes it just isn't. When it comes to getting rid of this pandemic, it just isn't. But fruitcakes will be fruitcakes. So we just have to accept that. And make sure that the majority does what is right for all. Looking at the US, currently, half of the population being (fully) vaccinated is an issue that needs to be addressed. What I have no tolerance for though is the kind of cynical attitude where people justify their inaction with the excuse that they don't believe a large enough sample of the population will get vaccinated anyways. So it wouldn't make sense to be vaccinated themselves either. That's just some self-fulfilling BS. If you're a functioning adult you understand the responsibility you have in being part of a greater good. Or part of the ambition. That's a rather self-serving misrepresentation of why national policies are the way they currently are. The goal is not "zero covid" you tinfoil capped moron. The goal is to be able to re-open society. And yes, everyone is well aware that covid won't go anywhere soon. But if we manage to re-open societies and get a better grip on the pressure on the healthcare systems, that should be an outcome we could all be happy with. No matter where you stand on getting vaxxed or not. Currently though, our best and most quick way out of this lockdown is through people being vaxxinated. Simple as that. And no, this is not an argument against effective treatments. But those treatments will not get us out of the current lock down. It's really that simple. This virus spreads too quick. And given the features of the delta variant, it looks like it evolves into versions spreading ever more quickly. The only alternative is to have everyone infected/resistent. If that's you idea of a better alternative, you can explain that to all relatives of covid related deaths. And also give a shout out to the people working in your healthcare system. Because you're basically giving them the middle finger.
  2. Here's another opinion: the publicly/governmentally funded space programs seem to have had their biggest push in development and innovation years/decades ago. Many of those programs have been cut in one way or another. So it kind of makes sense for commercial programs to spice things up a bit. Even if this kind of innovation is more commercially driven, it still is innovation. And this helps in a number of ways. One of them being there's more opportunity for more people to put in their expertise and creativity to help push these innovations. Simply because there will be more people active in this field. This will help drive innovation. And there's more opportunity for people to become active in this field. I'd rather have them building newer/better/faster space ships than to work at some bank.
  3. Perhaps a rolling LOL would help? We just LOL our way out of the pandemic! And we'd not be spreading fear but LOLs. Literally.
  4. Yeah! Virus go! Now! Virus bad! And stop bugging me. I want no part of it either! O, and please stop spreading the virus as well! Have a vaxine! Thank you! /sarcasm !
  5. FLOL True. They completely morfed into the same person in my memories. Been a while since ive seen rocky. More than 25 years. Easily. Thats my excuse for making a poopoo of myself. ? Val=Dolph!
  6. The grift is still alive and kicking. Amazing how many people are willing to put their money into this crap.
  7. If you get a burger from me, you just made an assburger statement. And if you don't know what that means, you probably earn one. Or are one. Also, burgers are junk food. You need to stay away from junk food. * wags finger to the internet *
  8. I hate to ignore xxx's post, but I'm surprised there's no mentions of Top Gun and Rocky IV in this thread. Those are 80's classics!
  9. To my ears, it's placebo. The original sounded fine anyways. My mind tells me it's a bit more crisp, but again, there's nothing wrong with the original. So I assume it's my personal bias hearing things.
  10. Related and possibly interesting
  11. mods, please merge with cringe thread
  12. first time i agree with zeff!
  13. I saw Prometheus recently. It aged better than expected. Likewise for Alien Convenant.
  14. nope. im completely honest. you havent established anything other than convincing yourself it's not a paradox. but its ok to leave it there. it's clear you've made up your mind. wrongfully so. but it doens't matter.
  15. Sounds like "a reason to think something" is similar to picking a team. You're either on team A or B. Neither or both are no options? Or shades of grey? How about 90% possibility of AL and 10% possibility of no-AL? No reason to think no-AL could be an option? Zero? With what we currently know, you're 100% team AL? Impressive. Wouldn't personally think that's a healthy approach, but if that floats your boat, more power to you. One final thought. This thing about the badly named Fermi Paradox not being a paradox got me wondering. You do know the difference between a contradiction and a paradox, right? Because it sounds to me like you're treating a paradox like a contradiction (or some proof for non-AL). If you solve a contradiction it stops being a contradiction (or you disprove it). But that's not how a paradox works. A paradox is a paradox because of the appearance of a contradiction. Even if there is none. Or if there is some fallacy underneath it. Or in terms of wiki: The Fermi paradox is just that. A paradox. It's not meant as a proof for no-AL. It describes a difference between expectations and evidence/observations. I mean, things get weird real quick if it becomes impossible to acknowledge this difference is actually a thing.
  16. that's not equivalent, imo. it's perfectly reasonable to say it is possible there is AL and it's also possible there isn't any. there are plenty reasons in support for both options as far as i'm concerned. the notion that if i say "it's possible" does not imply that i should think the opposite to be impossible. it's possible there's nothing besides us. not saying that's the case. just claiming it's a possibility. And it just happens to be the possibility closest matching the evidence we have seen so far. your original statement was something like there being no reason (none) to assume there's nothing out there. i think that's too strong. there are plenty reasons. but that doesn't mean i have to think there's nothing out there. it's a classic case of: it could be either way. until better evidence, i'm leaving all options open. it was never meant as a reason to think there's no AL. that's not what the paradox is about. it's merely about the discrepancy between the evidence we have and our expectations. our expectations based on what we know simply do not match what we currently observe.
  17. !? so in other words, you don't understand why the fermi paradox is a paradox. or what a paradox even is, I'm guessing. and not only that, you also appear to dismiss anything beyond your own comprehension. that wiki page refers to over 100 articles. and you walk in and poof it's all nonsense. OK. hello, dunning-kruger. i think that wiki page gives a nice comprehensive view on the various arguments and explanations. nothing to be dismissive about, imo. to me, the most interesting thing is, assuming we're not unique and perhaps even mediocre compared to other civilisations in the galaxy, what would that galaxy look like? would there be plenty of civilisations spread throughout the galaxy? wouldn't they just be anywhere? i think it would be most likely we'd have noticed by now. it would have been obvious. instead, we're still at the stage of tinfoil caps and fantasy. trying to explain why they might be hiding from us. and every trace that goes along. no signs of energy. no communication. nothing. well, apart from a couple of blurry pictures. or some nutjob saying they have been kidnapped. all these attempts to explain away the obvious seems like a waste to me. it's all fantasy. crop-circles and the like. as far as i'm concerned, we might have missed this fully populated and civilised galaxy by a billion years. and any civilisation from those glory days may have been long gone. it took us - or our solar system - 5 billion years to evolve into where we are now. and the progress of the last 100k years blasts away anything that happened before. you'd expect any civilisation that's a million years ahead in evolution to be all over this galaxy. and there should have been plenty of those civilisations. in the meantime, we're staring into a big nothingness. being high on the dreams of our consciousness. hoping something's out there which is going to save us. and it's spiritual, because... well, if god is dead, you need something to fill that gap, i guess.
  18. LOL the mental gymnastics the fermi paradox is not a paradox. haha! good one. it hinges upon there being no evidence. or in other words, it's based on the "we haven't seen anything". please lets not wander off in fantasy land. it's a paradox because of contradicting observations (lots of suns/planets, no evidence of ET). there might be a good explanation. but an explanation does not turn a paradox into a question in any way. even with an explanation, the fermi paradox is still that. a paradox. i must say, i've never even heard of anyone reasoning away a paradox by claiming it is actually a question. I must be smoking something with a lack of THC. it's the ufo's thread, after all. THC is a must. i'm sorry for not being high enough. ill try better next time.
  19. Lets take a step back for a sec. Your first claim was: there's no reason to think there's no "alien ai" in this solar system. The response was quite simply that one reason could be that we haven't seen anything. Your response now is that a possible explanation is that they lay low. Be that as it may, but that possibility is not a particularly strong argument for there being "no reason to think theres no alien ai in this solar system". At best it's a possible explanation why we haven't seen any. And it's not even a strong explanation, btw. Why would they bother laying low? We'd be a bunch of ants from their perspective. Whatever it may be though, there is still a reason there wouldn't be any. Which is we haven't seen any. That's no proof or anything. But it is a reason to think there isnt any. And a reason is more than none. Simple right? But I'll repeat: it's no proof there is no intelligent life. Although that possibility is still real. (a lot is possible, even the no ai life scenario)
  20. None? I'd start with the Fermi paradox and work from there. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fermi_paradox
  21. The funny thing about UFO's, is that contrary to popular belief, aliens is not the explanation for these phenomena. If aliens were the explanation, they wouldn't be called UFO's. They'd be called alien spaceships, or something. Because it'd be quite obvious it would be aliens. The fact that aliens isn't the obvious explanation should make people assume there are simply no aliens involved. We would have known by now if they were. It's a hard pill to swallow, I'm sure. ?
  22. I think it gives him good memories about his time in Cornwall. And I believe he said in interviews he still likes his older work. To me this means he makes music which is close to his heart. If you make music close to your heart, it never really ages. It's a memory pod to a former you. Distilled memories and emotions into tunes.
