  1. I was also a member of the planet mu forum! I’ve pretty much gone the same route. Got pretty bored with where things were headed. I was “cyclikyl” on that forum. I wanna say it was around 2004, but I can’t remember. It’s crazy, I remember the influences thread on that forum and how so many members also liked mr bungle and megaman music- made me feel at home. Planet mu and gamingfm (video game music station forum) were the only forums I ever was really active on, other than gear forums. Altho my friend has hyped watmm to me for 15 years, so I finally joined! Anyways, welcome! Total bullshit about v snares. I remember a lot of hate going on there. That’s why I quit.
  2. Escutcheon is a pretty terrible word. It’s way too complicated of a word for it’s most basic common meaning. There are definitely more words like that I can’t think of at the moment, but yeah- escutcheon should be something more esoteric (another stupid es word).
  3. What type of current capture card would you recommend for getting vhs recorded in good quality? I’m in the market for one, it could be usb or whatever. Just curious what you would recommend.
  4. Yeah I forgot, I also saw something about an emu and an ASR once, but wasn’t sure if it was actually true. If it was in an article tho, I’m sure he probably used one. It makes sense to bounce around with samplers trying to find the perfect one. They all have such a varying amount of terribleness while still having such a diversity in the things we like. I love the way the mirage sounds, but wouldn’t want the headache. Originally I was kinda annoyed by the akai s2000. But that was 20 years ago- after bouncing around and trying different ones (specifically poly/chromatic ones) it’s probably my favorite. So I bet he did the same. Although I wonder if he still uses the Casio at all
  5. About 20 years ago I was obsessed with getting everything he had. The tango re-release got me more excited about gear than I had been before (the vague gear list) and I started hunting down what were my favorite tones of his. Immediately I realized the dx-11 was my favorite keyboard, and definitely the one I liked in his early tracks. The only thing I was never able to obtain was a Casio fz-1. But I did eventually get an emax because of my obsession with faith no more, so between that and all my other samplers it would have been overkill to get the Casio. I still dream about owning one tho, underworld used one too I think. So- for lunatic harness what I remember reading was that he really only updated his computer and got the original nord lead (IMO warmer sounding than the 2). Although it seems like maybe he got another sampler as well, because you don’t hear the Casio 12 bit sound, or filter. I thought in a video he said he moved on from the Atari 1040st and got a Mac around that time. Yamaha dx-11, Roland d-50, alesis hr 16(b- I think), Nord Lead 1, upgrade of some type of sampler and fx? He was using cubeat or something like that in the Atari 1040st before, maybe cubase as well, so software-wise, idk. He seems to often express his frustration with tech and having to upgrade all the time, which I sympathize with for sure, longing for using his Atari and midi only. I doubt he’s still using the boss delay pedal or art Ltx for reverb, because it sounds higher quality at that time (not as good IMO). Although that could have been because it was recorded on tape before? It’s funny, I was in a used music shop once and I was talking to the guy behind the counter about the tx modules and fm things that mirrored dxs. He told me (without my saying anything about idm) that his friend was trying to collect all the gear that “some guy called mu-zeek that’s friends with aphex twin” used. I thought it was quite the coincidence! I eventually started caring more about what equipment orbital and skinny puppy used, and various death metal pedalboards. But Mike paradinas was definitely my gateway drug into “getting gear your heroes use.” Some of my friends think it’s not important, and just want whatever cool new thing comes out, but I just want the ingredients in my favorite recipes.
  6. I hadn’t seen this video for a long time, and I thought I would post it in the “sad songs” thread, but it’s not really sad sounding- especially when compared to the rest of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds’ stuff, or even Einsturzende Neubaten for that matter! After watching it again I realized it was worthy of a favorite YouTube video. The live version video from back then is good, too.
  7. I love the 4th season of the wire, and season 2, which was crazy because at first I hated season 2. But then by season 4, you are prepared for new characters/story, so it was just really good.
  8. Some of my friends did this but a top 3 of all, except instruments, I added that and dropped 2 off seasons of shows and podcasts. Choosing 3 albums and books would have been too hard for me, haha, but I could live with one podcast and one show
  9. Mr. Bungle- Disco Volante Faith No More- Angel Dust Orbital- In Sides Skinny Puppy- Bites Depeche Mode- Violator (if allowed more I would definitely have afx saw2, uziq in pine effect, and probably glassworks) Annihilation- Keith Giffen Sinestro Corps War- Geoff Johns Return of the King- Tolkien Out of the Silent Planet- Lewis Lost Light- James Roberts -books are tough because I’ve never read the same thing twice (except the hobbit and chronicles of narnia) so I’d probably bring new stuff, but this is more of a best of anyways. Terminator 2 Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me Empire Strikes Back Light Years Princess Bride (if it was more I’d probably choose a clockwork orange and Pineapple Express for a stupid comedy) Arrested Development season 3 (curb season 2 and 3 are good too, it seems like after the year 2000 every show has a stellar season 3- comedies at least) Secret of Mana Final Fantasy 9 Megaman 2 Rygar Chrono Cross (just because of how many different ways it could be gone thru) Some type of akai mpc, either the 2000xl or the live 808 bass yamaha dx-11 303 (I guess a distortion pedal would be a must, I’d sub out the 303 for it) Rabbits or Tanis podcast, can’t decide. Probably Rabbits. This was a lot harder than I expected- the tv season and albums were the toughest decisions for me.
  10. You’re trapped forever on an island that has everything you need to play any type of media. You can only have: 5 albums 5 books (graphic novels, magazines etc) 5 movies 1 tv show season 5 video games (or board games, etc) 5 musical instruments 1 podcast What would you choose?
  11. I just figure if my mpc live gets gross, I’ll buy one of those panels that go over it and make it look like an old beige one. I debated getting one anyways. I still haven’t taken the plastic off the touchscreen either, haha, but it will be nice when it gets nasty. Everything should just be the normal plastic or metal, why do they think we suddenly want this rubber feel? Don’t they know people don’t like like thin layers of rubber coating their favorite..... units
  12. That sucks about your father in law. Good find tho- I got so much weird shit like that when my uncle passed, too. It’s a nice way to honor them tho, to use stuff that’s been obtained that way, I think.
  13. I can’t hype the strymon big sky enough. If you haven’t listened to one in person, do it before you buy another reverb of any sort. I almost bought strymon’s output module (forget what it’s called) just because their stuff sounds so good. It’s the only pedal I don’t want to be true bypass, because the buffered quality is so good. I saw that Steve roach recommended it along with the eventide space factor as the best 2 reverbs, but I have a pitch factor, so I went with a brand I didn’t already have.
  14. If I had a more minimal setup, this is would be exactly the type of studio I would go for. Looks awesome!
  15. Yeah, I remember back in the early 2000s trying to find nanoloop and midines was tough, but it was easy to get Atari synthcart and the coleco drums. Then, eventually when new versions came out it seemed easy to find them, but at that point I didn’t really care that much. As far as other chiptune stuff goes- I only used the “incredible music keyboard” software with the c64 at first, but eventually got mssiah, and it’s probably the best chiptune thing I have..... but I’m not as sentimental about the c64. I always wanted one when I was younger, but didn’t end up having one until I was in my 20s and I found one someone was throwing away with other accessories. Never ended up getting the coleco drums thing, but it syncs with the Atari synthcart, which I love. I tried to keep up on all the chiptune stuff, but eventually I got bored with it. However- one of my biggest regrets was not getting the synthcart midi adapter. I had never realized that Paul Slocum made one of those until https://atariage.com stopped selling it. If anyone on this forum ever comes across one, let me know!
  16. Mine is also very old, I think from 2004, it’s either the first version or the second. The samples are definitely off, but I like using the noise for drum sounds anyways. The newer versions look sweet. Mine also has some random pops sometimes, but could be my nes. It’s still the one I had from when I was little- I’m too sentimental to use anything else tho, haha I definitely will!
  17. I’ll probably get one of these too, for my actual genesis. The main reason that I didn’t was just because I’ve collected so many chiptune things that require the actual unit- and that’s awesome, I love that, but this one was easier. They just take up so much space. Also- I was a Nintendo kid, so it was much more important for me to have the midines and nanoloop. I also would have preferred the sidstation to the mssiah for the same reasons, but at the time (15 years ago) they were too expensive- still are. Basically the sega and c64 weren’t as sentimental for me. Still cool that it uses the actual chip (like the sidstation).
  18. Just ordered one of these. The 2612 version with red knobs. I have way too much fm stuff, but I’ve always wanted to exploit the original genesis chip.
