Want your music playing at the 48 Hour Film Festival?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone - We (that's me and two friends) are going to participate in the 48 Hour Film Festival in Berlin over the next weekend (17.-19.)

48hourfilm.com

The concept of this festival is the complete production of a film from start to finish within a certain time span, plus including a couple of predetermined things, e.g. a line, an object.

The time limit is quite tight - 48 hours, who would have guessed - so I won't have time to start looking for music during cutting. Therefore, I'm making the following proposal to all of you:

Post ANY track of yours you can imagine being used in the film and played at the 48 hour film festival in this thread!

____________________

We will be randomly assigned a genre, so I can't tell you what direction I want the music to go in, it all depends. I am however (roughly) looking for:

  • Ambient-ish-stuff (cause it's always good to use and compatible with our filming style) - drone or melodic, with or without beats, even field recordings with minimal synths are allright
  • Anything that makes for a good atmospherical match (or contrast) with a big city like Berlin, "urban" sounds, even a good hip hop beat
  • Faster stuff, e.g. for a running scene, doesn't matter which genre or style, as long as you think it could be used in a film
  • Weird/Odd/Experimental/Funny stuff - these things are versatile which makes them strong for the difficult genres (I remember SoapSkumm's "Ouch that HZ" which would be very good to appear sort of ironically in a Comedy - a genre I hope I am not going to get after all)

Don't be put off by this list though, if you think your track will work, post it anyway!

The important thing is, as written on the page:

"As with music, pre-recorded sound effects are allowed, but you must have rights to use them. "

So of course I need YOUR permission, but you also need to make sure you're not using (obvious) third party content in your tracks, e.g. Ouch that HZ would probably contain too many samples that could be linked back to the original artist - I am not so well informed regarding all this law-bullshit, let's just say - if you have made something yourself, using drum samples from various sources, but created the melody and rhytms yourself, that's fine, BUT would you post e.g. something like "I made a cool mix of Lustmord and LFO" then obviously we can not use it.

Of course I'll put whatever you want me to in the end credits, track name, album name, your name, you name it.

I am going to take all tracks with me, of course I will only be able to use very few of them, and I won't be able to tell you which ones it's gonna be in beforehand. There's also a chance that none of the tracks will turn out compatible with the genre we get assigned randomly as we start, but still - there is a chance I might pick your track, and all films will be shown at the festival. The winner film will be shown at some bigger festival, and if you look around the page, you'll see that they are going to select 10 films to be shown in Cannes, so ... Let's hope we manage to come up with something good and not get a crappy genre in the first place. :P

Finally here are a couple of sample clips of things I've made:

I do believe you will find yourself stimulated creatively by my work. I invite cordially you to verify this.

First off, it should be mentioned that you can hear quite a few of my tracks at http://rithum.com/erothyme

You have my permission for any of them. Ask me and I will get you the mp3 or wav or flac or whatever you want.

Specific tracks worth mentioning, off the top of my head:

Cloverleaf Interchange - Very richly layered and spastic psychedelic IDM. This track is so complex that I still discover new things about it every time I listen to it despite the fact that I composed it.

http://don.gs/~bobby...Interchange.mp3

Mirage - An ambient track featuring unobtrusive polyrhythms and textures that make your face melt.

http://don.gs/~bobby/Mirage.mp3

Vitric Reiterations - Cold, dark, and heavy. Takes some time to build. Has massive amounts of drive to it. This track could make crackheads go cold turkey.

http://don.gs/~bobby...eiterations.mp3

Mind Over Matter - Like videogame music on a cocktail of meth and mushrooms. Designed (SCIENTIFICALLY) to make ravers crawl around whimpering and to make hippies levitate.

http://don.gs/~bobby...er%20Matter.mp3

Hyaloid Echoes - Highly hypnotic and cyclical track with a delightfully unusual soundscape. This track could put anyone into a trance. Even you!

http://don.gs/~bobby...id%20Echoes.mp3

Connective-Affective - Gorgeous beatless cornucopeia of synths and my heavily manipulated vocals weaving in and out of each other in elaborate patterns and unusually beautiful harmonies.

http://don.gs/~bobby...e-Affective.mp3

Haven't We Been Here Before? - Massive psychedelic groove. You will see colors.

http://don.gs/~bobby...re%20Before.mp3

Soft Eyes - Same description as the previous track, really!

http://don.gs/~bobby...Soft%20Eyes.mp3

Blue Shrouds and Rainclouds - Melancholy downtempo track. Lots of interesting sounds. Lots of prettiness.

http://don.gs/~bobby...0Rainclouds.mp3

Cycloid Metahighway - Rarely does so much funk manage to find itself in one piece of music.

http://ctrlfjesus.co...Metahighway.mp3

Appelsien - This is less than 30 seconds long, but it will blow your mind anyway. Made of a sample of a child's voice.

http://ctrlfjesus.co...s/appelsien.mp3

Enjoy perusing my wondrous jeweled artifacts. Good luck with the film, regardless of what music you use!

Meet Me in the Middle - Possibly the zaniest house track you've ever heard.

http://don.gs/~bobby/Erothyme%20-%20Meet%20Me%20in%20the%20Middle.mp3

Optic-Mystic - Sounds like I made it on ecstacy (because I did).

http://don.gs/~bobby/Erothyme%20-%20Optic-Mystic.mp3

My Body is the Axis Mundi - Trippy, sunny beats complete with cyclical synth sequences and field recordings of birds!

You Make the Grass Green - Drum and bass? Uh oh!

Wow what a wanker.

Do you review your own albums?

Of course I do. I also spend a significant percentage of my free time kissing the mirror and sending myself text messages.

But no, seriously, don't be a dick. I gave the man precisely what he asked for.

Post ANY track of yours you can imagine being used in the film and played at the 48 hour film festival in this thread!

I took the time to give brief descriptions of every track I posted (which is necessary, given the stylistic scope which my work encompasses) for the convenience of someone who deliberately stated:

I won't have time to start looking for music during cutting.

And I used my sense of humor in the name of entertainment. Where, exactly, is your sense of humor?

Do you have a problem with me fulfilling the request that is the basis of this thread?

Or is it that you think being silent to the grave about your art work in the name of modesty makes you noble?

Uh oh! You caught me!

So did you actually hear any of it or are you flaming me because I'm not signed to Warp?

I find it difficult to listen to music (no matter how good it may be) if I know that the person making it masturbates to pictures of themselves as part of their creative process.

Congratulations on invalidating your opinions of my work and making an ass of yourself by making gross generalizations about my personality based on a warped perspective of a single post on a forum.

ps: That's a pretty debilitating condition for someone who listens to IDM!

The extreme length you went to defend yourself only supports my argument.

You consider making a few posts on a forum to be an extreme length? Jesus, man.

The only things the level of effort I've put into this support are (1) I am wired and (2) I am amused by your inability to tolerate the art of hyperbole.

Also, are you going to post music or are you just going to continue to mindlessly criticize those who do without even hearing their work?

If you want my music go nuts

You may not like it though, it's free. That's right I'm not charging people $13US for my music. I just want people to listen, not rip them off.

I charge $13 for my physical CD. A CD which I personally shelled out the cash for the production of and for which I designed the graphics. I distribute my music freely all the time, all over the place. In fact, I just posted over a dozen tracks on a public forum and offered to post more.

Criticizing me for making a little bit of money off of something that I've been working on for a long time is not a very intelligent argument to be making and is not helping your case; you are now merely looking for reasons to criticize me.

Erm, is that some kind of faux pas or something? I was under the impression that the point of discogs was to create the most extensive possible database of such information. It only seemed logical to me that I should contribute.

Pardon me, I was unaware that it is unacceptable to consider your life's devotion to be important.

That's right, go ahead and pin that one on me. Nevermind that this whole dialogue is nothing but your mockery and my defense against your mockery.

I've got to apologize for feeling the need to respond to every bit of unnecessary heckling last night.

I'm not trying to make excuses, but I suppose you can understand that the combination of being wired and being tired didn't help.

Are you really going to keep picking petty fights? You are behaving exceedingly belligerently. I guess I fed the troll too much last night.

I never came here with the intention of making enemies. It's a damn shame that you seem to be so intent on it. As I said, you are now merely looking for excuses to criticize me.

Heyho, stop fighting please. I'm going through the tracks posted, I've only just started, and there's been some real interesting ones already. Keep it up! ( I'm actually quite fond of some of Erothyme's beat-driven tracks so far, whether he's being ironic or funny in his descriptions or not - they do help after all. ;) )

I've gone through the FAQ's on the festival's page some more and found this additional part about the music:

We want to use public domain or royalty-free music or photographs. What do we do about the Music Release Form or the Materials Release Form?

Have the person who has the rights to the music or materials sign the release form. In the case of royalty-free materials, this is the person who purchased them. In the case of public domain materials, this could be anyone on the team. Please also include documentation that shows your rights to the music or materials, such as a license, a purchase receipt, or a statement by the author. Note: You may only use materials if the license granted to you allows for all forms of distribution.

Like I said I'm not really big into the §, but I'm guessing this means that your posts in this thread saying something in the sense of "yeah sure you can do anything you want with it" technically authorize me to sign the awfully long Music Release Form myself instead of forcing you to go through the torture of reading/printing/signing/scanning/mailing them back to me... right?

What I do need to get from you for sure is stuff like your name and more info about the tracks (if that's not provided within the media information or on the hosting website) - so it would be cool if you could just PM that to me.

I'm leaving tomorrow, so if you want to submit anything (else) you're gonna have to do that today or I won't have time to take it with me.

I've saved most things that have been posted but I haven't listened to all of it yet. I'd say most likely I will use more than one track (but still I can't promise anything) - again, really good tracks! I haven't got enough information by some people though, I'd like at least your real name cause I need to fill out that silly form and I don't know what to put in it.

I'm sending everyone a PM in case they don't check this thread anymore - I need your statement proving that the license you're granting me "allows for all forms of distribution" (I promise I won't do any shenanigans with the tracks) so I can take a printout of that forum page or PM with me, just to be on the save side.
