"a text-and-photo essay about the adult movie industry and the recession."

seeing as most of us here are reasonably intelligent people and consumers of porn, i thought (possibly wrongly) that some of you might find this essay interesting. personally, i am completely shocked at the level of darkness involved in todays porn industry. i mean, its always been a sleazy business, but some of this stuff is pretty gut wrenching. the first page is not for the feint of heart (the text, not the images). the piece was written by susanna breslin who has a very interesting blog and has written extensively, and very intelligently, on porn in the past.

an important piece i think.

but dont sites get ad revenue from all the traffic?

also, i didnt intend for this to be an anti porn thread in any way. i just thought the essay was a well written, intelligent analysis of the industry

this is a good read, cheers.

btw,lol@The plotline concerned itself with a coterie of firemen and firewomen, who, in the wake of the tragic death of one of their fallen brethren, were consoling each another by engaging in copious amounts of sex.

They Shoot Horses, Don't They? is a novel written by Horace McCoy and first published in 1935. The story mainly concerns a dance marathon during the Great Depression.

interesting..

if anybody is interesting in reading a book (fiction) on the same topic pick up The Pornographer's Poem. It's a fucking devastatingly great book. won a ton of awards.

Interesting read, what strikes me is how much the porn industry and the music biz have in common. They're basically producing content for free, but governments don't give a shit if porn companies are getting ripped off. Honestly, who does? we all think of these girls as fucked up, and the "stars" of the 80s and 90s only get by from their website subscriptions, with the young guys these days it's all about the fucked up shit on the net. Having a liberal president now, I kind of worry where it will go next.

I have to disagree with this author as being intelligent or a good writer. I found myself scanning through her blooming prose trying to get to the topic at hand. That's all--I liked the nuggets once I got them; it was just fatty writing. Like the one fucking crab claw that finally splits only to have a few shreds of flesh.

I agree somewhat. it wasn't what I would call bad writing, but a few pages worth of shit could have been trimmed probably. reads stylistically like some of the occasional articles I've read in rolling stone over the years. nothing especially revelatory here. I went in expecting some mindblowing expose, but it was pretty mundane.

yeah man, with that black fella in the white house, people are gonna be wishing for the sinmple blowjobs of the CLinton administration. He's gonna be getting his soul-brothers together to run trains up on white 18 year olds. And the liberal policy makers will sit back and bless marriages between horses and humans.

yeah this was kind of lame. zak smith, an artist who has also done a few indie porn films, wrote a book called we did porn that is a lot more honest and interesting than anything in this article. unfortunately it tends to lapse into a pseudo hunter s thompson gonzo style, but it's worth reading simply for the primary source information on how the porn industry works and how it's a morally ambiguous place rather than just outright evil.
