i want to get into soul music. recommend me some stuff. is there some kind of slightly experimental classic soul, something verging on trip hop but from the seventies? basically the more melancholy it is, the better.

good thread. i wish i could contribute, but I need to be schooled also. Other than motown and Withers I don't really know shit.

Doesn't get too much more melancholy than this (taking the lyrics into consideration). This shit's like the story of my life. Loosely.

psychedelic soul: but i think this is more soul with elements of psychedelic rock, not really trip-hop like you need

maybe you should look at one of those sample-identification websites under certain trip-hop artists and see who they've sampled

i have a feeling what'll hit the spot for you is going to be singles, not an entire subgenre

not melancholy at all, but just fucking great.

I don't know... I agree with you that it IS a fucking great song, but I've always thought it was a little menacing. Maybe it's the continuous high-pitched note that runs throughout it.

i'm liking the roy ayers song, but i see it's just a demo. is that version on a release?

I'd never heard that version before. Here's the version you'll find on most compilations.

Yeah, it's on Virgin Ubiquity II: Unreleased Recordings 1976-1981.

i like the standard version of the track as well, but for what you described, it felt like the demo was a bit more apt. those vibraphones are just fresh.
