I'm trying to learn Spanish at the moment and I thought to help make things a bit more interesting I'd start watching a lot more Spanish cinema. Does anyone have any cool suggestions?

This movie is a cult classic full of symbolism you may have misunderstood.

it's from the same guy who did the holy mountain, thx for advicing!

Yes, from Jodorowsky. The Holy Mountain is his best imo. If you get the chance, watch the commented version, otherwise you will miss thousands of interesting details.

it's good-looking but shallow, boring and massively overhyped.

holy mountain is good though.

It is certainly not shallow. Again, it works on a symbolic level.

No, just some of it, I guess it worked to some degree on a subconscious level. But I enjoyed it, it was so out there, so weird.

cool. interesting. if i looked at a painting and got nothing from it, would i care about any symbolism or meaning i'd missed? and would i have to review my initial reaction? dunno when i walk around galleries i'm unlikely to read the card for works i don't like.

I hear you. I used to think like you. Like, if I don't like it immediatly, then I won't bother. But scratching the surface and going deeper on something can be very rewrding. Just like an AE track. Same for movies and art, tons of stuff i didn't like at first but then, after having learned a few things about the artist perspective or some interesting interpretation, I started liking the things.

Art doesn't need to be explicitly appealing to be good. Discuss.
