Villalobos Weirdness

Yeah...

since I've been to an amazing set from Villalobos at Berghain, I cannot forget his unique style of weird Minimal Techno. Quite slow stuff, very long tracks and much much developing. Sometimes there even was a breakbeat or IDM-like feeling to his stuff.

Been checking all his recent releases and I love his stuff (Sei Es Drum, Vasco, What's wrong with my friends?).

Another guy going in a similiar direction is Oni Ayhun (OAR 001, 003 & 004 are great).

Do you know how to call this style of music? Do you like it? Do you have similiar artists or releases to recommend?

Oh yeah Villalobos is the best...especially when he plays his usual late/last sets like at Berghain or Fabric.

Some tracks of Luciano are similar (like 'Oenologue'...couldn't find it on youtube though), but I don't know what his sets are like.

Or Farben:

edit: villalobos releases are soemtimes called microhouse.......thats a vague term though

I love villalobos, one of my greatest nights at fabric was a 4 hour set of his, followed by 4 hours back to back with craig richards. Proper head fuck of a night, club was still going strong at 9am :sorcerer: Some of the messed up sounds / beats they were playing were unreal, especially richards who is the master of the subtle pitch bend half way through a track... making it slower! Messy.

Might be a bit obvious but M_Nus have just released a Plastikman "best of" compilation, and there is a live mix CD coming out soon too.

Maybe also check out some of the newer Shackleton stuff, his old releases on Skull Disco were more dubtechno, but he's recently moved to Germany and is doing more 4/4 stuff now.

i could never get into this guy. maybe because i've only heard it on headphones. the only thing i like is "blood on my hands" remix, "easy lee", and "dexter". most of it is just too repetitive or something. I like subtlety in ambient/drone music, but to dance to I think it has to have more obvious funk. But maybe on a big system it is better, probably considering the amount of fans he has.

Recommend me a Ricardo Villalobos album, please?

Alcachofa IMO. The two latter tracks the guy above mentioned are also on there.

Alcachofa is a good place to start. Then I think Sei Es Drum is probably his best work. I also liked Vasco, the CD version with the 30 minute epic. Salvador is a nice compilation of earlier 12s and has a great remix of Senor Coconut. Achso is also a good EP with 4 long tracks.

that oni-track combines elements (quite uniquely to my ears, but i didnt really follow that sound in the last years) of mid to late 90ies techno imo. the funky unfunkyness, the stoic bassdrum & the shuffle reminds me of cologne-labels like profan, studio 1 etc, the weirdness of dj slip or dj t-1000 fe. a bit more contemporary might be mikael stavöstrand f.e. but i recommend searching for the ancestors hehe.

Check out his fabric mix CD, all his own productions and remixes, mainly exclusives just for the release.

Its an awesome mix, but proper marmite for some of the fabric hardcore fans (as in, they hate proper minimal repetitive stuff but I really enjoyed it)

he played On.. and on at fabric this weekend, rolled in an hour and a half late at about 10AM and played the most fucking disgustingly incredible set imaginable. guys an absolute legend, easily one of my favourite electronic musicians. im not overly fussed on his productions, but live the guy is just hours and hours of pure rhythmic ecstasy.

if you like villalobos, try getting some live sets by marco carola, he has recently been getting seriously talented with the auld minimal, and is playing some seriously interesting stuff atm. be warned though, it can be relentlessly minimal if its a live set. i lav it.

Oni Ayhun is an alias of Olaf from The Knife. - FYI.

It's difficult to make recommendations as Villalobos is quite unique in that, although his focus is house & techno, he plays right across the board including some fairly experimental dance music. As far as DJs - there isn't really anyone else like him. I would only suggest Luciano if you like the latin house that Ricardo plays, and even then I don't think Luciano is good at all. He basically took one element of Ricardo's style and completely ran with it. He's terrible IMO.

There are a group of Romanian DJs who Ricardo helped make famous who bear some similarities, Raresh, Rhadoo & Pedro - it might be worth looking into them.

If you're after specific albums or tracks the best thing to do is get a tracklist from a live set and look up artists that he plays.
