Songs of a Dead Dreamer is very good. It's not crap, but he's definately more of a interesting and intellectual DJ than full blown musician. I think dj /rupture is sorta in the same vein.

Only album I have is Optometry, and it's alright. He pretty much coined his own genre "illbient," I don't think it's that great though.

DJ Olive coined the term, and I believe DJ Spooky never quite labeled himself as such (that goes with a lot of genres/movements...I don't think any major artist claims they coined dubstep, IDM, chillwave, etc). But yeah, they were both involved in Soundlab, a collective that came up with "illbient." Good music, but the term is outdated and out of use, much like "trip-hop," and really peaked in the late 90s. That said, I think illbient was ahead of it's time.

I saw him live in boston about 10 years ago and it was pretty terrible... of course he had a toastmaster and this guy never shut up for a second during the entire set. He'd jump around between hiphop and jungle and occasionally flip some "beat juggling" routine between the 2 decks which was really nothing more than a moving trainwreck, which included scratching records which were recordings of other djs scratching (dunno if he thought this doubled the awesomeness or something). As young as I was I still remember that even then I knew what I was seeing was retarded.

His best work isn't even his own, IMO. It is the Necropolis mix he did with a lot of the illbient producers at the time. If you want to listen to similar music, but executed in a much better fashion, look for DJ Olive, We, Sub Dub, Bidawi, Lloop, Once 11, Byzar, etc. Check Olive's label called TheAgriculture (BBQ Beets mixes are good). Incursions In Illbient is a good compilation. Lloop "Bulbs" is worth checking as well. Current artists that carried on a similar feel with updated production are David Last, Nnnj, QPE etcccc.
