while this thread's going, could I break in and ask more specifically for hip-hop production milestones I should check out? Lyricality is never something I was particularly enamoured with (call me a plebeian or whatever) but lush and/or impressively sparse backings are lovely to tune out the words to.

for those of you who might not know, there's a track on this album called "wouldn't you like to know" that is basically a remake of sorts of "alberto balsam". I tried finding a youtube of this but had now luck.

Deltron - Deltron 3030

The Roots - The Tipping Point

[youtubehd]L9eKBMp6xnA[/youtubehd]

In this context I wouldn't count it because it's not complete without the accompanying animation, but DJ QBert's 'Wave Twister's' is outstanding in terms of vision.

I love The Roots but The Tipping Point doesn't really do it for me. It's such a dry album, it seems like a reaction to the diversity and psychedelia of Phrenology. The tour was absolutely incredible but of course they changed the arrangements almost beyond recognition. I remember they came out with Boom and sounded absolutely nothing like the album version, took us a few minutes to realize what they were playing
