The Best Music from the Worst Equipment

I'm not sure about worst, but best music from the simplest set-up I've seen is Sachiko M.

Amazing stuff.

Great thread. I was going to suggest the same. I'm sick of all the hate and negativity around here.

While not necessarily "the best music" or "the shittiest gear", I found these impressive for working with such minimal and relatively inexpensive equipment:

Casio CZ-101 and Roland CR-8000 only:

30min jam session using nothing but a kaossilator for sound generation and 2 kaoss pads for looping and fx:

Yamaha TX7 Only:

Only DSI mopho + reverb and delay. All internal sequqncing:

More minimal kit:

I'm actually a fan of those old Yamaha 2-op FM synths.

With the 5 sliders they're much more fun to program than a DX7.

Agreed, although I wouldn't really call that "programming".

Not only do most Jandek songs sound like they were done on cheap equipment, they also tend to sound like whoever made them wouldn't even be able to play a regular song....well, I'm sure he probably could, especially now that he's been releasing albums for three decades, but you get my point.

manitoba (caribou) wrote his first album with "... a shit computer with a really basic sequencer, records, a few different keyboards, a couple guitars, and percussion"

it's not mentioned HOW crap his setup was but judging that he was using a 'shit computer" my guess the rest of his setup for that album was crap as well.

One of these for $50 on my local craigslist right now.

That's a great deal. They usually go for over $100 on ebay. Nice little digital Phase distortion synth. I don't know anything else that really sounds like the Casio CZ series, and they have never really been properly emulated in a vst. The factory presets are fucking horrible, though.

Yeah years back I would've picked it up right away, but now I feel like I have too much gear for how much space I have. I passed up an $80 Ensoniq ESQ-1 for the same reason.
