Always interesting. I like this quote from Mika Vainio:

"for me music is about emotions, for me the so-called absolute music doesn't exist, it's always connected to emotions and that's what matters to me. When I listen to music what is important is what is evoked in me, what I feel."

I think a fair amount of experimental music, especially more academic forms, is sorely lacking emotion.

that's pretty interesting. i tend to agree that stuff like Xenakis and hyper-complex "academic" stuff isn't really "emotional" in the same way

it's more focused on intellect and I don't think you can have emotion without intellect. I don't think intellect is unemotional

so I'm not totally convinced

i always enjoy vainio interviews, but the exciting news for me is the new releases coming up. in particular, these bits:

"His forthcoming album, Kilo, due out on Blast First Petite in March or April, contrasts heavily with Magnetite, his last solo album released by Touch just a few months ago. "The new album [Kilo] is quite similar in style as Pan Sonic was," he says. "It's based on beats and rhythmic structures [whereas] the album on Touch doesn't use any beats, there are rhythmic structures but not like that, so it's quite different for me. It's really brand new, I finished one week ago - last Sunday I was doing the final mixing.""

and

"And, Finnish label Sähkö will release my new album [as Ø], this I have been working on quite a long time, slowly, and it might be ready end of March or something"

For me, sometimes an 'academic' piece can evoke deep emotions. Take the album Musica Per Un Anno for example: Completely based on mathematical principles rather than on 'traditional' compositional techniques but for some reason for me it evokes the sound of isolation, anticipation and calm (I've fallen asleep to it many times1) - http://boomkat.com/cds/114895-enore-zaffiri-musica-per-un-anno

Good news. Always preferred his Ø work to his Mika Vainio work.
