  1. I'd already splurged on all the digital in Bandcamp, which is basically an extended version of the vinyl box (or the vinyl box is a curated subset of the digital) - but decided to get the vinyl as well - the green vinyl version directly from WeMe was the cheapest option for 45 € (6 in stock): Juno has it for 85 €, Clone for 65 €, Decks for 70 €, Bleep for 93 €, RedEye for £80 (all without postage and most probably not green vinyl). Get it from WeMe while you can or just go for the full digital with 40 tracks (the vinyl has 24) for under 30 €. No download code (as of yet) from WeMe.
  2. The day police bombed a city street: can scars of 1985 Move atrocity be healed? (The Guardian) I remember reading about this years ago, even back then I was completely flabbergasted that the police - any police - would actually kill civilians by bombing them.
  3. I've noticed that there has been a considerable bump in postage costs in recent years, but this is also due to couriers' extended handle on the market; domestically, Europe-wide using the national-transnational postal system costs are semi-reasonable, but overseas e.g. from US to Finland, even small packages have become really pricey; value-added services like registered/signed for/tracked are almost a necessary evil when the price of the item(s) exceeds a certain limit. Then again, couriers have bulk options where the costs don't go up linearly, but if I would like to order a 12" or two from Bandcamp to support a label or artist directly, the p&p becomes prohibitively expensive due to limited options (although you can usually ask if there are cheaper options, some labels explicitly state this on their pages), the postage can easily be as much or even more than the price of the records themselves. This is why I've gone mostly digital after being a vinyl-only aficionado for a lifetime - but items like this GC box are my exceptions: the postage from the UK to Finland is 24.20 € on top of the 90 € for the box and yes, it does sting a bit even when I accept the cost-benefit ratio. At least I'm not a heroin addict, it's only vinyl. Only vinyl. Only...

  8. This is one of the most bizarre US things I've come across - the requirement to register to vote; from my point of view, it seems more like a pre-planned way to disenfranchise people without means to register and limit the ability to vote to those capable of getting registered, the humongous leaks of voter registrations during the past years notwithstanding: millions of people have had their PII (personally identifying information), their voting history and whatnot leaked and most probably abused because the registrars' complete lack of operational security know-how. I remember Deee-Lite's Vote Baby Vote because in 1992 I turned 18 and thus became eligible to vote and I had to do some actual research in a library to understand that in the US you have to register to be able to vote; in Finland, everyone of age (currently 18) is eligible to vote (with just a couple of exceptions, like being under guardianship or a ward of the state) - even prisoners have the right and get to vote without exception - the fact that millions of people in the US are not eligible to vote because they're in prison or not able to register to vote because of a criminal record is perplexing. In Finland vote secrecy is absolute and it's rather unusual for people to divulge the person they voted; party affiliation is usually announced, but even that is something that a lot of people want to keep to themselves, especially those older than my generation (X). Our elections are direct, even the presidential vote.

  13. Shoshana Zuboff - The Age of Surveillance Capitalism: The Fight for a Human Future at the New Frontier of Power is a rather wordy tome but definitely worth checking out; I'll also recommend Evgeny Morozov's To Save Everything, Click Here: The Folly of Technological Solutionism and Adam Greenfield's Radical Technologies. But what do I think? Although I still rebel and revolt against the extraction of behavioural surplus (see Zuboff), the battle against the technology behemoths and pervasive (commercial) surveillance has been lost and a lot of people have just given everything and then some away willingly, because social media, construction of identities, people calling themselves influencers, Metcalfe's Law and other pests of our networked world where straight teeth in your mouth are more important than the words that come out of it and countries governed by kakistocracies. So yeah, I loathe the surveillance economy and despise the people who willingly work to invent, build, manage and maintain the surveillance networks - to quote Jeff Hammerbacher "the best minds of my generation are thinking about how to make people click ads - that sucks."
