Guest A/D
about 2/3 into the pale king. way better than I worried it would be. some of his finest writing is in there, I think. it's also really hard, which I guess is supposed to happen.

ghOsty
When The Mob Ruled Vegas by Steve Fischer it's a collection of stories about the actual mob related events that went on in Vegas in the late 50's and 60's, I've always found mob-related stuff fascinating and this book is really well researched and tells it concisely without having extra unneeded details. Guest dese manz hatin
I'm surprised I'm absolutely loving this so far. And I realize I've made a huge mistake in buying the last two Kerouac novels I've read in German. Translating his writings destroys him completely. Guest Iain C
Thanks to my girlfriend. I'm a huge fan of Italo Calvino and love the ideas behind the Oulipo, so I'm not sure why I hadn't read this before... but it's excellent. I'm surprised I'm absolutely loving this so far. Guest KY
i had a slight chortle at the fact that, in Foucault's Pendulum, the inciting action which kicks off the novel doesn't arrive until more than 100 pages into the book. talk about exposition, jesus—even the bible starts off with a bang. come on, eco. Half way through Shantaram but taking a break to read some Oscar Wilde short stories. Off to the library tomorrow to find more fun.
Cazador Mod Unit
I gave up after a few pages Levi-Strauss (didn't actually care) and one third of Theodor Adorno's Minima Moralia (too depressing). Managed to read a couple of David Foster Wallace things online. A great interview, an essay on the ethics of eating lobster which is seriously awesome, and one article about a luxury cruise that was funny but unpleasant as it is contemptuous, neurotic and his ironic resignation reminds me of my worst tendencies. It's kind of a guide on how NOT to live. A bit ashamed of this but read three introductions. On Theodor Adorno, Ludwig Wittgenstein and Karl Marx's Capital (this one on comic book form lol) loved all of them. I have zero training in philosophy but I really want to know about the stuff without getting a headache and feeling stupid that I don't understand what is going on. I saw this guy giving a lecture to an empty room on Film Socialisme and while this is intended to be read by teenagers it has lots of cool challenging things to daydream about. Argues that modern ethics are wicked and corrupted, gives you tools to recognize and fight evil, makes the case for revolution I guess but don't quite understand how it is supposed to win if it refuses to conquer and become power itself.
