Wii storage solution

so at GDC Iwata revelaed Wii update 4.0 which adds support for SD cards up to 32GB, oh yeah. also new wii channel for card storage, and games can be played directly off cards, as well as wii channels. decent solution with no new hardware upgrade. basically adding extra 32GB hard drives for about $100 a pop, with 240 game max capacity per card. get updating.

Buy.com has 32GB SD cards for 80 bucks... why not allow support for USB hard drives? that would make much more sense cost-wise - do they think that Wii owners are that unsophisticated that they need something simple like an SD card so they won't muck things up?

Granted, I doubt most Wii owners will need more than 16GB, let alone 32GB of storage, so that's not too bad. I still don't like how Nintendo forces what they think is the "best solution" on it's users - Sony's finally learning from that mistake at long last...

I recently got a 1TB WD MyBook external HD for 99 bucks... seems like a much more affordable solution in the long run.

lol this is nintendo we are talking about. I too would prefer a USB hard drive but this is better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.

Hopefully, the next generation of consoles (although I've heard from pundits that this is the last generation, blah blah blah), the following will be standard on them:

1) built in WiFi

2) HD, possibly eschewing a media drive altogether (direct digital downloads)

3) a robust online store/community hub

4) HD (looking at you, Nintendo)

5) Full media file support, so it doubles as an entertainment hub (and make it easy and make it work)

yeah, i've been messing around with this update for the past hour. its pretty good, but you still need to have enough blocks free on your wii to play a game off of the SD card. its not perfect, but its better than what we had yesterday. also, they've introduced arcade games for play on the wii shop channel. just got the tower of druaga ^_^.

fuck media support, i have a laptop for that

i want a game console for one specific task: to play games.

Did you even read or understand what this was for? It's so you can store games you've downloaded from the Wii Shop onto SD card, and run them off SD card rather than having to swap them out with the Wii's internal memory.

i was commenting on the post you made, saying you wanted media support for more formats, i assumed you meant music and movies.

I bet it was only for esthetic reasons they didn't want USB support

they could totally make a lot of money by manufacturing a wii-style usb hard drive.

i don't mind sd cards in the wii. they're cheap, i've got quite a few of them and they're pretty much universal these days.

remember the target audience for wii skews very young and very old, SD are simple for non-tech idiots and grandmas "oh sonny, do i just put this plastic thing in the slot and it's like having a plastic walmart bag to put things in? thank you now i can return to my old farts wii bowling championship".

Do you watch movies on your PC, sitting in front of your desk on your 20" monitor? Would you rather watch them on your big screen tv in the living room without having to haul out the PC there?

Nothing wrong with a console doing double duty - as long as it doesn't come at the expense of the games.

still strongly disagree, i have a laptop and a pc with media center, i dont want my gaming console to play movies/mp3s/whatever at any extra cost to me. fuck that, if i buy a game console it is specifically to play games, not to cater to idiots that want some kind of all in one media playing bundle bullshit contraption faggot thing.

Well, to be fair, I haven't seen where this generation of consoles' media features have hindered game playing, so nothing to worry about there, eh? I used to feel strongly like you do, but once I saw how nice it was to stream movies from my Mac to the PS3 in the living room, connected to a 50" plasma, I appreciated the fact they put this feature in as an option for those who want to use it.

I can see why it is useful to someone that can't already stream stuff to their tv, but I don't want to have to pay for something I already have.

This.

Why is it so hard to find cell phones without shitloads of bells and whistles and other features I won't use? I want a PHONE, only a PHONE, and nothing but a PHONE. It adds unnecessarily to the cost as well as the fact that more features = more components = more potential points of failure for the thing to break down. This principle applies to all electronics and appliances, videogame consoles included.

Never thought I'd say this, but after these last few years, I'm not sure I even care about Nintendo anymore..

It turns out the Wii is just another one in their series of dust-collecting consoles after all.

hi xbox360 fan here

when micro$oft first said you can burn your games to your HD i was like wow awesome.. but then i relized you need the game in the machine for it to work..THOUGH whilst running games off your HD the 360 is silent, which is nice.

another thing xbl should get rid of is microsoft points. WHY do we need some sort of currency for xbl? surely it would just be faster to pay in £ or $ or euros (wherever you come from) instead of paying money for points to buy stuff. cut out the crap...

another thing, the media is good i guess, i plug my exhd into the xbox and it plays movies on my screen (if i 'get' hd movies it looks lovely!) but there is a lack of subtitles, xbox just dosnt play the subtitle file *shurg* just little things i guess

I'd look into streaming those files from your PC... then the 360 just acts as a conduit for the media, and subtitles will then probably work.
