i really enjoy watching MMA, but i've only got so much time and internet.

please share your favorite fighters or fights, i know there's a lot i've yet to see.

my favorite fighters at the moment are:

Shinya Aoki

(the baka survivor)

Gegard Mousasi

this is actually a K-1 match, so no ground game, but you can also catch him in Dream promotions. the replays are a treat.

Fedor Emelianenko

vs. nogueira

vs. randleman (crazy suplex in there)

Badr Hari vs. Errol Zimmerman (K1):

This thread is dedicated to one of our fallen heroes "lion"

i'm super into mma now. i got into it a little over a year ago and now it's basically all i watch on tv. unfortunately, i don't get any of the channels that show the other leagues, so i mainly watch ufc most of the time. i watch other fights online, but i don't usually have the spare time when i'm on the computer to go looking up fights.

my favorite fighters at the moment are:

anderson silva

lyoto machida

anthony johnson

jon "bones" jones (he should totally change his name to the martian manhunter)

georges st-pierre

wanderlei silva (too bad rampage knocked him out...still love him tho)

lyoto machida - really really surprised me with his last match, total ownage. can't wait to see more. his previous(?) fight vs tito ortiz was just him eluding for 3 rounds it seemed.

anthony johnson

jon "bones" jones (he should totally change his name to the martian manhunter)

georges st-pierre - i love to hate, but he's a good guy, my hate is unjustified, but it's there.

wanderlei silva (too bad rampage knocked him out...still love him tho) - if you haven't already, check out the two times he destroyed rampage back in Pride FC.

get HDnet if you can! they have MMA every night at 3am, from compilations, low tier stuff, to live events. They tend to show all the DREAM events too, which is an awesome promotion from the people that brought us Pride FC (before UFC bought it out and killed it). they also show K-1, which is really growing on me. and of course Inside MMA

i wish UFC would do a Grand Prix like the japanese promotions. fighters doing 2-3 fights in a night, tournament style? awesome.

also there's IATV, which shows classic Pancrase matches (ken and frank shamrock, bas ruten, old school).

i also love mma, its really good for your physical health if you practice it properly but i think mma has reach a peak popularity wich has spawned a lot of ppl who want to look as if they were practicing the art by the way they dress etc and ppl memorizing the stats and not practicing the art one bit

id rather just watch a fighting movie, mma is always more dissapointing

i just can't agree with that. now that i've been watching mma for awhile watching choreographed fight routines in movies just doesn't do it for me anymore. watching people stand around waiting to get kicked in the face isn't that satisfying after you've seen some real technical matches between 2 skilled opponents. but the thing is, it's not that badass if you don't know what you're watching. might just look like 2 dudes rolling around on top of each other, but if you know what they're doing, it's extremely entertaining to see fighters switching between submission attempts, trying to maintain control, passing guard, etc. it's like a physical chess match. and of course, just about anyone can enjoy 2 skilled strikers going against each other.

but in my opinion, after you've seen anderson silva fight, no movie can top it. fighting in movies is more like dancing.

lyoto machida - really really surprised me with his last match, total ownage. can't wait to see more. his previous(?) fight vs tito ortiz was just him eluding for 3 rounds it seemed.

the fight against tito ortiz wasn't as spectacular, but i thought it was still a great fight. he was elusive, but he was still landing a hell of a lot of punches/kicks. tito just couldn't touch him and couldn't figure out how to fight him. that's tito's bad, not lyoto's. he may not have that "wow" factor yet, but i think he's one of the best i've seen. i don't need to be wowed by huge KOs, i just like to see the poetry in motion. the way he just picks motherfuckers apart is entertaining enough to me.

georges st-pierre - i love to hate, but he's a good guy, my hate is unjustified, but it's there.

yea, i can see that, but i have a hard time ragging on anybody that is as dedicated as he is. and on top of that, he just straight up owns people. i love the fact that he makes it a point to go back and systematically destroy everyone whose beaten him in the past. his rematch against matt serra was a great example and most recently his followup fight with bj penn (aka the douchebag). whether you think he cheated in that fight or not (i don't think so personally), he completely destroyed bj and showed him for the punk bitch he is. he tried to call georges a "little bitch" for tapping from strikes, but his ass gave up between rounds. the definition of PUNK BIIIIIIIIITCH. don't get me wrong, i still respect bj as a fighter, but after that he definitely lost me as a fan.

wanderlei silva (too bad rampage knocked him out...still love him tho) - if you haven't already, check out the two times he destroyed rampage back in Pride FC.

yea, those fights were fuckin' brutal. really hard to watch the one where he just knees him like, 20 straight times to the head and he collapses out of the ring. there was no doubt in my mind that rampage was going to win the third fight though. he wasn't gonna let wanderlei beat him a third time. he wouldn't be allowed to show his face in public again if that'd happened. i don't really like rampage though. he seems like an alright dude, but i don't like his style. he looks like he's just dragging a dead leg around half the time. i was hoping that keith jardine would beat him in that last fight, but it wasn't in the cards.

i also love mma, its really good for your physical health if you practice it properly but i think mma has reach a peak popularity wich has spawned a lot of ppl who want to look as if they were practicing the art by the way they dress etc and ppl memorizing the stats and not practicing the art one bit

do you fight then, jubes? what disciplines do you study?

i must admit i haven't gotten into actually doing mma yet although i am a bit interested (i just downloaded a torrent of gracie jiu-jitsu basics. lol. my and the missus are gonna try to pull arm bars on each other in the living room). mostly i'm into the strategic aspect of it, so right now i'm just content to watch and analyze. that said, i definitely don't dress the part or front in any way like i'm something i'm not. by looking at me you'd probably never know this was something i'm into.

i'll leave you all with some exerpts from one of my favorite recent fights. stephan bonner vs jon jones. if you haven't seen it, check it out. jon jones has got some serious talent!

I've been watching mma for about 2 and half years i think. I just binged on ufc's and watched them all over the cause of about 9 months. I'm doing the same now with Pride and i think Pride has possibly been slightly better for consistently good events. Once it gets past the first few events anyway - it took a bit to get warmed up.

My favourite fighter is probably Anderson Silva, closely followed by GSP and with honourable mentions to Machida, Fedor and Roger Huerta - when he is in the mood, his fights are brilliant to watch.

I also thought that Jon Jones looked damn good against Boner (i said Boner), he's only young too.

i really enjoy watching MMA, but i've only got so much time and internet.

Fucking hell, i really like that guy's style. What organization is that? The fights that are in the ring, that is.

plus its gay

not that there's anything wrong with that, but a lot of fans will get neck vein roid ragey if you bring this obvious fact up to them 'hey guys when those 2 guys are on the ground doing reach arounds and rubbing eachothers balls all sweaty thats kind of gay' response ________ (insert any jock neck vein outburst)

to me it's only gay when you have 2 meathead, overly macho guys going at each other. the tito ortiz types that are like "i just like to beat guys up, get on top of 'em and pound 'em out...you know, just really punish guys." that's the gay shit to me because at that point you're just going off the emotion and the outlet and the high it gives you to dominate somebody - you're getting off on it, essentially. and when you watch it, it's exactly like watching guys fuck in gay porn. but when it's just two skilled technicians who live by that martial arts code of honor and whatnot, it becomes less about emotion and more about strategy and intelligence and in that case it doesn't come off gay at all, even if somebody is "mounting" someone or "taking his back".

that said, it doesn't help when dudes have "CONDOM DEPOT" advertisements across their asses on national tv.

and that said, a lot of fans of mma are roid ragey bros that don't really know much about anything and only watch to see people get knocked out or beat up. there are aloooooot of those and they're the most in the forefront, but i just try to ignore that aspect of it. you can't help who the fans are.

I am a one stripe Brazilian Jujitsu whitebelt. WATCH YO BACK SON!

But for really, i love mma. There's tons of downsides to it (trashy people, sketchy fights), but the evolution of it is interesting to watch. Even though there are rules, I think we're seeing the evolution of fighting. Jujitsu guys were considered the end-all until people started cross-training. Then it wasn't uncommon to see a jujitsu guy who was a world champion in the jujitsu world to get absolutely stomped when he got into mma. From what i've seen this has forced jujitsu gyms and students to re-evaluate their training methods. Too many people training for sport and not enough emphasis on self defense/fighting.

Some of these 4th generation guys like Torres and Jon Jones are awesome to watch. They've got excellent striking, wrestling and jujitsu and know how to put it together into an exciting way. And with Machida now and his focus on being evasive and not taking ANY damage (along with not using hardly any energy), there's yet ANOTHER area fighters can study.

I'd highly recommend trying an intro jujitsu class. Usually the first one is free. Of course there's some meatheads in every gym, but there's many more people who just like the art for what it is. If anybody needs advice on where to find their local bjj gym, feel free to pm me.

dude, you're awesome. thanks for putting me onto this channel. i just upgraded to an HD receiver in my livingroom and i didn't even realize i had HDnet until you mentioned it and i looked it up online. in a few days, my tivo should be packed to the brim with fights!

Fucking hell, just checked the K-1 wiki entry ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K-1 ), the Dutchies have been owning this sport for years. Any Dutch fighters in the MMA?

there are some, yea. the dutch are big on fighting, especially kickboxing, but there aren't a whole lot of really big dutch mma fighters though. there are a lot, don't get me wrong, but there aren't that many "stars" that are dutch. most of the really big guys are american, brazilian or japanese. the others tend to get overshadowed, even if they're good.

HDnet is great, must have for MMA lovers. they also rerun arrested development and also their news programs are decent. they'll actually cover a story for more than 20 seconds.

as for dutch fighters, check out Melvin Manhoef and Alistair Overeem. if you can, look for a melvin manhoef entrance. he's got the best, almost street fighteresque, dancing jog as he makes his way to the ring.

big lols, beat me to it. It's great for about 45 seconds then they look like snakes mating.

that's what i was saying a few posts back. if you don't know what you're looking at, it just looks like 2 dudes laying on top of each other, but when you become more aware of the actual technique involved you see that there's more to it and even when they're on the ground, there's still action happening. it's just different action. but if you don't know what rubber guard is, or butterfly guard, arm bars, leg locks, heel hooks, half guard, full guard, side control, sweeps, passes, triangles, anaconda chokes, north/south, etc. and you don't know how to identify what those techniques look like then you're not really understanding the action. it's easy for everybody to understand a fist colliding with a head, but it's less obvious when things go to the ground because the average person isn't versed in wrestling/jiu jitsu/judo/whatever techniques.

That's why no one is hollerin' for Kimbo Slice anymore. He was the bee's knees until people saw how easily a titan will hit the ground and wallow like a pig with emphysema.

eh, people who are really into mma never really liked kimbo slice. he's like the vanilla ice of mma - a guy who some promoters/agents/marketers tried to hype up and cash in on, but not someone who has any kind of credibility within the sport. i'm not saying he can't be a good fighter because i think he does have some raw potential, but he's not very accomplished at anything but street fighting. there's a lot more to the sport than just going out there and throwing punches and there are a lot of skills kimbo doesn't possess nor does it seem like he thinks he needs to possess them. that's kind of insulting to real fans or real competitors. from what i've heard bas ruten was very unhappy in his brief training stint with him - said he was unfocused, not willing to push himself, not willing to really dedicate to training. if he got his shit together and really decided to become a student of the game, he might be a real contender, but as he is anybody that isn't a total amateur or a tired relic is going to systematically pick him apart and embarrass him.
