just saw this movie last night

few thots: havent seen too many movies like it that's for sure. Despite not really digging it it's a totally worthwhile watch just b/c of it being such a different movie experience. decent acting, great visuals though a bit same-ish for me and redundant near the end. for defo longer than it needed to be (watched the unedited version)--- i understand it's art and not mainstream but i still think it was too long.

the 2001 space Odyssey reference was a bit weird at first but i kinda got that vibe after about 40 ish mins (long silences, tunnely light effects)

anyway overall it was good and I would recommend this to weird/arty people

i hated the shit out of this movie. watching a shaky camera fall into holes while people whine and scream about bullshit is not good cinema.

Indeed, I got more from it than that and have only seen the trailer

Best Opening Credits Ever

Great Visuals

Amazing Atmosphere

Good Idea

Philosophical

.. But..

The Movie dragged like a cowboy being pulled by a horse.

I did not cared for the characters at all , nor did i care for the story. I was so bored when it ended.

This movie kinda fucked with me. At the end all I knew is it's probably the worst movie to see on a first date, and I just wanted to hug my mom from seeing that whole car crash thing..

one thing that i really dig in this movie was his internal dialogue throughout the first 30 minutes or so.. like when he gets hit and he's talking to himself like wow this is a really strong drug. just thought it was cleverly done. Although the bit where he keeps telling himself "just stay away from the balcony" at first gave me this feeling like the character alex had some sort of maliciousness but it just added to the main characters state of mind. I've actually never tried dmt but i imagine this display to be pretty honest to those who have tried it?

Yeah, I know....but are we arty or artsy?

btw i heard irreversable was just terrible and not really worth seeing, is that true?

Has a very long and brutal rape scene and a long/very realistic (realistic enough) skull crushing/head smooshing scene, but it is beautifully shot and has wonderful acting in it.....

I prefer Enter the Void due to it being one of the most spiritually impacting films I will ever see....

yeah yeah yeah so they were playing with some big ideas, but the whole thing was a jumbled mess and the cinematography bugged me so much that it's all i found worth commenting on. what exactly am i supposed to get from this movie that's so mind-blowing? should i be impressed by how uncomfortable it is to watch one person's negative memories constantly rehashed in pointlessly gritty detail? or should i delight in the awkwardness of pseudo-incestual reincarnation? should i be delighted that everything in life is so cyclical, like the depressing and monotonous muted bass drums beating me constantly in the head while i watch? any interesting ideas addressed in this film are brought up only to be vomited on and kicked slowly to death (i mean birth OMG). it brings nothing new to the table except a headache.

the trailer was probably considerably better than the movie itself.

as for a good movie that came out this year, i dont know, saw true grit recently and i thought that was pretty damn good. cant remember much else offhand. imo most hollywood trash is better than this sustained abortion of a film.

Like I said before in the recent films thread, I completely understand all the super negative criticisms of the film but I thought the self indulgence of the film to be highly interesting for me personally. It was slow at the end and the main actor that we are following was pretty bad but that's the only thing I didn't enjoy about it.

True Grit was really good but it felt even slower than this when I watched it even with the incredible acting from in that film.

This film is unbelievably real. The first person camera perspective really puts you into the character's shoes, and the thought processes he goes through while on drugs are pretty fucking spot on. Only complaint was that it sorta dragged for a while when he was flying over tokyo. Also I don't understand the point of having the last 20 minutes basically a porno, although I'm not complaining. Ah I guess it's the whole death/rebirth theme.

Still though, hands down the most intense mind fuck of a movie I've ever seen.

edit: Also I like how they were accurate about their drugs. Most movies tend to just throw a random drug name in when a drug is called for, but in this movie they go into depth explaining DMT and Datura. I haven't done either of these but I've read into both of them and in the film they speak mostly the truth about these drugs.

This might explain some of it:
