Apple's Ping

Joyrex

Recommended Posts

Apple announced iTunes 10 with a major new feature - Ping - which allows you to share, communicate and see what other people are listening too, going to concerts, etc. Think of it as a Facebook for music.

Apple's done it again, I think!

LOL at iTunes users

LOL at those who use "having an iPod" as an excuse for playing music on iTunes

ping.fm

Yep was thinking exactly that. So technically my copy of foobar has therefore done exactly what Apple has only just done but without the 15 billion mb of bloat that no doubt this version of itunes adds.

I think most people hate Apple/iTunes just to hate it - the reality is that iTunes is the most widely used music manager, and iPods are the most common portable music players.

Are they perfect? Nope. Nothing is.

Is there a competitor that even comes close to the market share Apple has? Nope.

Wanna know why?

Because they actually make decent software and hardware that most people like and enjoy.

i use itunes and lastfm. the fuck should i do now?

Yeah likewise...I wouldn't mind trying out this new ping thing but no way am I just going to abandon my 4 years of last.fm stats! It would just be cool to be able to connect with so many more real-life friends...who aren't nerdy enough about music to ever use last.fm.

Gotta be honest, I don't get all the iTunes/iPod hatred. I didn't like the thought of having an iPod due to many misconceptions I had which were only finally cleared once I went out and bought one due to there being nothing compact on the market with 160GB capacity except one of those huge Archos players. If there had been a Creative player with 160GB, I would've probably plumped for that, but to be fair the iPod has some fucking good features. Genius is brilliant on both the iPod and on iTunes, and iTunes works far better (on a Mac) than I thought it would. I avoid on Windows however.

EDIT: Ping does seem very very close, if not identical to Last.fm however. On the other hand, there are tons of bugs in Last.fm's stuff - for example I can't ever scrobble from my iPod which is annoying.

Finally, a reasonable assessment!

But then you could say a similar thing about the market share of virus scanners. Norton has around a 60% share of the market, and as no doubt many of us know- that particular piece of software embodies the emoticon ' '

Norton's market share is based on user fear and ignorance, as well as good marketing. Also, some people run Norton just fine with no problems.

why do people complain about the size of itunes? is ram at a premium where you are?

because it sucks. drm is the bane of the internet, and steve jobs should be tried for crimes against humanity for the injustification of making apple users not step out of their comfort zones to actually LEARN something about how computers function. imagine if everyone used apple computers, there would be no need to learn anything ever!
