Day (not gay) trip to Brighton

I grew up here, all my family are from here, they used to own a few shops/buildings in the North Laines (The Lanes is actually made up of a small network of footpaths, however the North Laines is more open- Laine is saxon for open field)

Brighton is ok, thing is theres a whole lot of Londoners who want to settle down here (get away from the big city), they ruin it here, as they want some 'peace' in a city famed for its hedonism!

Brighton is good in the summer, but only before the students come back, as they clog up clubs and piss you off. Lately most of the good underground club nights have disappeared due to the demand in awful pop nights that have loads of underage kids running around (yeah, I know you lot like that thing but trust me when you're amongst it, you want to get out).

so brighton is liberal unless you are an incomer, student or underage kid.

there are some really strange clothes shop in Brighton. You could wear a bin bag with your balls hanging out and no one would flinch.

well...maybe they would

it reminds me of nathan barley

fuck knows mate. "same as it ever was" eh! everywhere's the same really.

you've got your gay's, lesbian's, crack heads, alcholics, students, kids, single parents, business people, snobs, hippies, etc. etc. etc. in every town/city..

but they don't all have a beach. :)

it's a grotesque dump.

a bit like London, but 1/100th of the size..

Well sure, London is a dump in many ways but the grotesquery of Brighton comes from the seaside-ness of it. Something horrible happens when Brits meet the sea, horrible piers with shit funfairs and union jacks spring up everywhere and before you know it you're surrounded by scum on their hen parties. Enough to make you want to bury your head in the sand really, except there is none.

Brighton's not really like that, as much as somewhere like, say, Blackpool. but i agree most seaside towns these days in the UK are absolute shit holes. but, i wouldn't say Brighton is one of those...

Yeah, that's not really the Brighton vibe at all. Blackpool is a fetid hellhole, Brighton is lovely. There's a bit of seaside tat, but 90% of it is done in a really charming nice way as opposed to tourist type shite

There are areas of Brighton I'm not a huge fan of, like West Street and Lewes Road, but strolling about the Pavilion in the snow or cruising around the Laines is lush, it's nice just to have a wander through town listening to some music as everything has so much character and charm

Yeah PM me messiaen if you ever end up down here again!

What do you do jobwise, if you don't mind me asking?

Well, I study in Equine Science in Essex, but for some cash I work in my parents deli, in the North Laines, it has been there since 1951!

Trying to think which deli too! Like the fact there's a few of us from Brighton here :)

If you do move, I'd recommend getting a job before you go, I was lucky and had a background working in education and got a job in a school straight away. My housemate just finished uni and has been doling about since he got here :(

I haven't completed any post secondary stuff, but i have a year and a half of experience working in customer service at a call center, and i've had about a year of experience selling cell phones so I'm hoping my experience will help me out.

As for getting a job before I come... How long in advance should I start arranging it? I would have already started but it seems kind of pointless to arrange a job now when said job will be filled in 3 months when I actually move.

edit: Also I work at a movie rental store and I noticed there are two Blockbusters in Brighton. Could try for that.

Hmm, well I gave my old one from where I used to live up in a moment of madness when I got to the point where I really didn't want to be there anymore, so I HAD to get another job one way or another. Bit of a silly risk and it could of backfired massively...

I reckon you'll need about a grand to get a place sorted with rent and damage deposit... it is REALLY expensive down here, a pint costs a fortune and rent is costly, and unlike London the wages don't always reflect that. If you don't have a job lined up, might be an idea to have a bit more behind you, though it'll go quick as when you arrive you'll be dying to go out all the time. Are you coming all the way from Canada?

All the way from Canada yeah. The work visa I'm applying for requires a minimum of 1600 pounds, which they say should be enough to support yourself for the first month (although I did a few calculations and I think 1600 per month is a bit higher than what is really required). I'm going to try to bring more though. The application itself could take up to 2 months after i have the funds anyways so that will give me plenty of time to save extra cash as well as pay for my flight.

I live in brighton, well just on the edge. used to live on old shoreham road for a year when me n waga shared. now I live all the way down London road, near withdean park, patcham more or less.

I like Brighton, it's got a lot of nice people, and a fist full of weirdos to boot. The music scene isn't as good as it was before I moved here. a lot of the cool nights don't happen as much as they used to, and the crowds get smaller as well. that said, a lot of good stuff does come through here, and there are still some great nights gping on.

Sprit of Gravity at Komedia is good fun once in a while, get to see some cool things there sometimes. There's the occasional thing at the Cowley club too which can be pretty enjoyable. I'm not really much of a going out person tho, so not the best to offer an opinion really... Some cool people playing at the Volks from time to time too, but I'm kinda sick of that place and it's shitty sound system!

Pom Poko is fkn great for some lunch time food, decent price and friendly people. I'm pretty partial to Grubbs once in a while,Double Mexican with wedges and blue cheese dip. there's an ok Thai place called Mai ped which does some good lunchtime specials. if you like sushi, then Moshi Moshi is ok, If you get a free membership card, it's half price on Mondays! Still kinda costly tho.

I've lived here for 3 years, and it's been cool, but not what I expected. although there are a lot of artistic people here, a majority of them are not so busy with being artistic, and more busy with getting wasted and calling themselves artists. well, anyway, that said there are a lot of decent folk here.

I do love the atmosphere here, I notice it more when I've been away for a while, come back and it feels all super friendly, can't quite explain it, but everyone is easy gping, and that can count for a lot sometimes.

I think I'm going to stick about for a few more months, planning to leave to Berlin in the Autumn. have a lot of friends there, and a lot of potential projects to get busy with. as much as I love countryside, I guess for now it's good for me to be in cities and mingling with people. I hope to get a job working from home, or start to make a bit more of a living of music, so that I can move to monmouthshire and live in the middle of nowhere!

Had no idea that so many Brighton folk are on here, that's cool! Hope to bump into some new faces next time I venture outside.

i totally want to go here now. it will probably never happen but it sounds like a great place. i've seen it on tv, chef ramsey or whatever did one of his shows there. i mean, i live in what's supposed to be one of the nicest places to visit IN THE WORLD, crazy, but it's not so special having been brought up here you don't realize how good yo got it.

Chef Ramsay. LOL "what the fucking hell shit are the fucking pies doing out of the fridge" LOL

The one time I went to Brighton I remember being at an extremely rubbish club, offending some stuck up girls and having one of the best chili burgers ever, smoking skunk at a hotel with lots of metal railing and peeling off paint.

Just as a warning to the non UK watmmers: Brighton, the place isnt actually gay, it's just some of the residents. Dont turn up expecting an actual gay location because you wont find one. In fact, i dont think there's any such thing.
