But yeah, I've heard other artists talking about getting a phone call from Weird Al and feeling like they've finally hit the big time. Yeah, Al apologized - Coolio said he wasn't contacted directly. Al had only spoken to an agent or something and he felt bad about the misunderstanding. Personally, I think Coolio flipped a bit when Amish Paradise became so damn popular, but since then they've made amends IRL in 2006. I saw Al at a UHF screening and he mentioned his least fav song he ever made was "Girls Just Want To Have Lunch" because the label begged him to do a cover of Cyndi Lauper. Also, Kurt Cobain asked him specifically to not do a food song when he spoofed "Teen Spirit," and Al ending up making it one of his best parodies. I think I would do this if it were ripping off artists I didn't care for (who are already making careers off of aping other artist's work), but if it were an artist I really respected I don't think I could do it. Yeah exactly, I'd have no qualms with say, a Led Zeppelin or Rolling Stones sound alike, because many of their hits are basically uncredited blues covers. I feel bad for small bands that decline song use then hear a soundalike in commercials. Tom Waits has had multiple lawsuits filed because of unauthorized song use. Also, I think Bob Dylan agreed to let Victoria Secret use a song because he sarcastically said he'd let an underwear company use a song of his in a 60s interview, if asked.
