I cant decide though without knowing what the FBI prevents. Also I have 6 cans of beer inside me. Its fun to talk about this shit though. Thus the FBI/CIA/NSA/HSA/TSA/DEA/ATF are either doing a bang up job, and the methods used are already fine, or the threat of terrorist attacks is vastly overstated. Government intervention in this sense is an invasion of privacy. And no, if one terrorist is found it does not justify it. Who knows what harm this kind of thing could do in the long run if left unchecked? Plus, I hardly think that terrorism is our worst threat; sex trafficking is probably a bigger one. Focusing on terrorism seems a bit ridiculous to me. Terrorism is more obvious and scary, but look around you and you'll see that other things are much worse. Although the people who've made child porn for years are probably pretty damn good at not getting caught, and probably never use Facebook anyway. The government is for building roads and being a cost effective way of running schools and hospitals. Sure they're useful for protecting our personal space from being violated by any other member of the community, but this should be in the context that those commissioned with the powers to do the protecting are also members of that same community and so must submit to the same obligations to respect liberty as everyone else. The actual question should be "if the government once uses this power to silence political dissent, imprison political enemies, or harrass individuals, would it be justified?"
