At some point plagiarism became a lot easier to pull of legally, especially when those with more legal power pull it off. There's been a trend of bigger entities (corporations, major media outets, etc) hiring producers to make "style" imitations. Black Keys had Pizza Hut use their hit song but in a karaoke backing track rendition VW literally aped Beach House after they declined multiple offers of licensing their music. this is the song VW commissioned: this is the one they asked Beach House to use: You're basically damned if you don't license something, assuming they even ask. I really wanted to hear how terrible it was. damn, I wish i had internet foresight to know what to save copies of when i see it. it was pretty funny. it had a lot of the same ingredients, simple / raw sounding synths, drums etc. melodies were pretty much the same but different (ala any advertisement ripoff track). it just sounded super weak and clean.
