D'Arcangelo EP (CAT 039) vinyl reissue

Suction Records

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Announcing it here on WATMM first. I'm sitting here now listening to the acetate of 1 of our 2 upcoming releases: a vinyl reissue of D'Arcangelo's 1996 EP on Rephlex. It's a real honour to be reissuing this masterpiece - honestly it was one of the key releases that inspired me to start Suction Records in 1997, and one of our earliest releases was a split 7" between D'Arcangelo and myself, Solvent.

This will likely be coming out in May, alongside our 3rd vinyl release by RX-101, "EP 3"... If you haven't checked out the RX-101 releases so far, you most definitely should if you're a fan of early AFX/Rephlex, with sounds ranging from SAW1 style warm electro/techno, to harsh Caustic Window crunch, to Bochum Welt style melodic synthpop. "EP 3" will be 6 tracks of pure Universal Indicator style acid.

We'll likely get pre-order links up in a few weeks, for those who want to get an early pre-order of the limited colour vinyl edition (lim to 150 copies - D'Arcangelo on blue vinyl, RX101 on yellow).

cheers,

Wow! Really nice this is being reissued, as it is a classic.

Yep, totally a Rephlex classic. Love to play it with Bochum Welt's Module 2 and Shipwreck. I remember I had to hunt my CD copy for a year or so and was soooo stoked when one copy became available in discogs. The seller lived in Peru at the time (most exotic place I've received anything from) and it turned out he had bought the copy from Marco Passarani while visiting in Italy. He also had a chance to dine with Fabrizio D'Arcangelo who played some live mix CD's from the D'Arcangelo shows. He had asked if Fabrizio had any copies of the EP left but they were all sold out, luckily Passarani had one left. Instead Fabrizio gave the guy Shipwreck and a CD of the master for Zero To Zero (!!!).

Although I don't do vinyl it's nice to see this reissued. Also cool to see D'Arcangelo camp becoming active again. Somewhere In Time - such a banger. Fits well with the other industrial techno stuff on Suction.

Cool, agreed. And also the synthpop side fits perfectly with the more synth/electro artists on our label - Solvent, Skanfrom, Lowfish, June, etc...

The 2 sides of this record - harsh, distorted, industialish on side A, and synthpoppy electro on side B, basically are the perfect representation of what the label is about... The original release was really one of the main inspirations to start Suction, which we launched 1 year after it was released

ARTIST: D’Arcangelo
TITLE: D’Arcangelo (Rephlex CAT039 reissue)
LABEL / CAT: Suction Records / suction039
RELEASE DATE: 06/06/2017

INFO: 6 track 12" EP; 500 copies w/150 on blue vinyl

Suction Records is thrilled and honoured to announce the reissue of D’Arcangelo’s self-titled debut EP for Rephlex, the legendary UK label run by Aphex Twin and Grant Wilson-Claridge from 1991-2013. D’Arcangelo are the Italian duo of brothers Fabrizio and Marco D’Arcangelo, active in the underground electronic scene under various aliases since the early ‘90s, and still going strong today. Released in 1996, their Rephlex debut “D’Arcangelo” was one of the first releases to make a firm connection between contemporary IDM/electronix and the sound of ‘80s synth pop. The 3 tracks on Side A are ripping, industrial-strength electronix, as fierce, crunchy and menacing anything Aphex Twin himself had released at the time. In sharp contrast, Side B’s 3 tracks are playful, clean and melodic instrumental synthpop, with clear synthetic references to bands like Depeche Mode and OMD. It was a sound that was certainly not in fashion at the time, and helped the EP stand out in 1996, for that very reason.

Suction Records was launched in 1997 by Toronto artists Solvent and Lowfish - both producers attended high-school together in the ‘80s, and both were obsessed with synthesizers and electronic music. The synth pop sound of the ‘80s was in their blood, but in the ‘90s, both became absolute converts to the sound of Aphex Twin and other like-minded artists on labels like Warp, Rephlex and Skam. Discovering this “D’Arcangelo” EP in 1996 was a revelation for the pair, a marriage of their 2 favourite sounds, and was one of the key inspirations for starting Suction Records the following year… so it was a dream come true when D’Arcangelo agreed to allow Suction to reissue this long-out-of-print and sought-after EP. In respect to the original release - Rephlex CAT039 - we saved a matching catalog # for our reissue: This is suction039.

The 12" is limited to 500 copies, with 150 copies on BLUE vinyl. Blue vinyl edition is available as a Suction-direct-order exclusive.
