  1. Out of the glut of Marvel stuff, I had a soft spot for the Netflix shows. Daredevil was great, and the other shows... not consistent, though there were moments. Terrible casting for the Iron Fist dude, I was rooting for him to die in the series. Great actor, and the best Thor. Has there ever been a good fantasy TV series, or film... classic book fantasy, translated to the screen? I've always thought that the LotR films were a bit 'meh', and the idea of the new show doesn't do anything for me. The Wheel of Time series is really shaping up to be rubbish, I'm yet to reach "nope" level yet, due to history with the books.
  2. Amazing film. Haim rivals The Deer Hunter era De Niro, in this prescient piece of social commentary. A scathing surgical analysis of America's inevitable cultural collapse, set against a backdrop of designer drugs, and rollerblading white supremacists.
  3. Good shout on Endtroducing. What about trying out bands like NIN, Filter, KMDFM, Skinny Puppy, The Young Gods...? And early Ministry, though not too early.
  4. Currently watching The Wheel of time. I'm finding it very poor, though watchable. The show has rekindled some interest in the books, and it's been fun chatting with mates about the books again. Audible released a new version of Book 1 read by Rosamund Pike in line with the show's release. She does a sterling job, I hope she does them all. As for the Prime show... The bad: CGI, 'sexing' up the plot to make it more GoT like, costume design (looks like Legend of the Seeker), the dialogue, pacing, the show runner, some fridging... there's a lot... The good: Great casting for Moraine and Lan, both Rosamund Pike and Daniel Henney are great together. Some beautiful filming locations. Some other good casting choices.
  5. I can confirm this works. However, this should only be used as a last resort, or under strict supervision of a musicologist. My group lost contact with a good friend - he had good taste in indie and alt rock - once he found the MDMA. He started going to really shit clubs, and listening to god awful dance music, he didn't care a jot for Autechre, Aphex, Detroit Techno... Be warned.
  6. Wicked album, I haven't listened to Pye for while, last release I picked up with The Spiral. Caved and preordered the vinyl.
  7. This is a very solid release, and fits well with the 12k aesthetic. The album's sound is cohesive, something I found missing at points with the Pure Magnetik albums. Perfect drifting ambience for the winter months.
  8. Second album released today from this post-punk band from Melbourne. Compared to their first album - dark, and industrial inflected - there are some poppier moments on Cleareye Shining. There's still a menacing, and melancholic edge running through the tracks, but they explored some new pastures on this record. Recommend checking both of their albums out, they're meant to be great live too.
  9. I wrote Gonk initially, so I must be right ? every track on the EP is wicked, varied, all within the confines of 3/4 minutes.
  10. I wasn't expecting this shift in sound, I think this is his strongest release yet, and I like his previous work. The sound design is on point. I was getting some AE vibes on Gosk, those metallic snares. Edit: I had this on loop on my train journey last night. It's been on again a few times today too.

That looks lovely. Quick scan of the programme list looks good too, I'd like to see Petite Maman, and the ROH screenings are always good. Nice link with the local Arts college too.
  12. I've been listening to this album a lot recently, one of his earlier albums, but still my favourite:

100%, as Villneuve has said many times, Dune is a love letter to the cinema. First IMAX film I've seen that improved the experience. I'll go again if given the chance. Yeah, I would have liked to ask some questions, but it was nice to hear him after the film. He genuinely sounds passionate, and that is nice to hear, as it's at a remove from the usual sheen of marketing and studio bollocks. Mapes: It's been mentioned a few times, and we've talked about what didn't make the cut, but this time it was very telling the lack of Mapes. It does feel like a disconnect having her in the scene with Jessica, dropping off some sheets to Paul's room, and then Leto finding her bleeding out. I'm sure Mapes raises this threat to Jessica in the book, and it does feel like theres a section missing.
  14. Artist talk streamed live today, Q&A at the end. Had it on in the background, so need to have a proper listen, heard "Wittgenstein" and "Cosmic Ray Detection" mentioned, and he talks about the Virus series in the Q&A.

@Soloman Tump Great seats and view. I think the last IMAX film was a Star Wars one, not sure, it was that memorable ?. The barn where you saw Dune, do they do films there regularly? I love locations like that.

    Dune

IMAX was amazing, deafening at times, but an amazing experience. I'm in love with this film, warts and all. I'd be happy with 4 hours for part, but that would never work commercially as you say. I have high hopes for part 2, I think if they shift the focus a little, and look at the impact of Paul on Fremen through the eyes of Chani - something he said in interviews, and reiterated during the Q&A - we might get to see a little more, and something different. The Q&A session at the end was only around 20 mins, questions weren't opened to the floor, but they covered the below: Filming & Part 2: Villneuve was intending to film back to back. He was glad they didn't attempt this, and waiting for the audience reaction was a better path to take. He had his first pre-prod meeting on Monday, after the figures from Sunday came in, to begin work on part 2. The gap in filming will afford them the opportunity to make improvements. Filming in the desert was difficult. When in Abu Dhabi, they were working in shifts from 3 till 8:30, before the Sun was fully up, and then back home to sleep until sun down. He said the whole process of filming Dune was like returning to film school. The Music: Villeneuve approached Zimmer at the end of filming Blade Runner 2049, and asked him if he was familiar with the book - he was, it's one of his favourites - so his involvement was there from the off. Apparently Zimmer never watched the previous attempts at Dune, as he wanted to come creating the music fresh. Villneuve was full of high praise, saying that Zimmer is a bonafide genius. For the development, Zimmer was off to "home depot" experimenting, buying pipes, cutting things up and trying to create new wind instruments. The Cast: Villneuve said that (and I paraphrase) "If you think I got the film wrong, made a mistake, there's one think I didn't fuck up, and that's the casting". The gom jabbar sequence was one of the first things they filled, and Villeneuve said he knew he'd made the right choice with Timothée - his first and only choice for Paul - and that he was "dancing around the camera like a rabbit"
  17. This caught my ears when I checked releases on Friday. Will pick this up.

    Dune

IMAX viewing tonight, with a Q&A session with Denis after. I'll tell him to sign up to WATMM and get posting some answers ? I'm sure the cuts will come up during the session.
  19. Missed the Ikeda that was on there, tempted by this. Released earlier today.
