  1. Now this I never understood - I doubt there's a single person at any of their gigs going 'wow, this is great, I just hope they don't release a soundboard as that would make it less exclusive'. I saw the untilted tour and I love those 2 soundboard recordings that came out later. The stuff they're playing at the moment is just a bit too much to take in all in one listen, seeing the gig AND listening to the soundboard gives you the best of both worlds.
  2. Hmmm, I can't really equate downloading a torrent of some super-obscure music as 'sticking it to the man'. By all means do it, especially if you can't afford the release in the first place, but it's a bit of a stretch to also claim you're making some grand anti-corporate statement.
  3. Ooh, controversial. IMDB forums might be more your sort of thing, hyperbole a speciality - pretty much every movie has a 'this is the shittiest movie ever!' thread.
  4. I was thinking of giving it another try at some point, but I think I'll have to get fairly drunk before hand, it's the only way I can get past the total idiocy of lots of the movie. It doesn't change my love for the first two alien movies one bit though, if anything it's alien3 that 'spoils' aliens for me a bit - she goes through all that and then everyone she cares about dies as soon as the credits roll? I only really bother with the first two now I think about it, all the other ones aren't really worth a damn imo, prometheus especially.
  5. Was listening to this last friday on a long, cold, drunken journey home. 1st 3 tracks are still amongst the best things they've ever done. It's not quite their best ever album, drops a bit and loses energy around fermium, but there's some of their strongest ever tracks on it. Strangely, my old flatmate was borderline obsessed with sublimit, without having any interest in a single other autechre track. I'd try and get him into other ae tracks with no luck at all, he just wasn't interested, but he'd listen to sublimit over and over again.
  6. Same here, still hasn't left the mp3 player. The guy is an absolute fucking master when it comes to writing melodies, it's a rarity in a lot of electronic music these days.

I love the start of v-proc, but the 2nd half is crying out for a bit more of an interesting progression - an ae melody to tie it together would have been nice. The 'beat falling apart' effect they use doesn't work at all for me, they could have at least gone for an epic 'non-existant' style beat deconstruction.
  8. As far as Alien / Prometheus comparisons go, there were repeated moments in Prometheus where the characters acted in such a 'what-the-fuck' manner, it bought me way out of the movie. I can't think of anything like that in Alien - maybe if straight after the alien bursts out of Kane's chest Dallas lent in to give it a stroke going 'hello there, little fella' you'd have a point. One of the joys of Alien is watching this fairly disparate group of co-workers trying to get to grips with this awful situation - I'm not sure they make the right choices (NO FUCKING WAY would I have gone into those tunnels with a home-made flamethrower), but their reactions, and the way they try to deal with this threat are consistent and believable, it makes all the difference. Some people are able to look past the fact that all the characters in Prometheus are inconsistent cyphers, goofing around like 12-year olds in space and behaving in utterly bizarre ways just to move the plot forward - good for them, there's some great stuff in that movie and I'm glad they can enjoy it. It's a deal-breaker for me I'm afraid.
  9. Ah really? I only just watched it. I think the problem I had is not so much that it was a bad movie, but that it was a possibly great movie. You can see bits of greatness, and it makes some of the bizarrely terrible story decisions show out all the more. I'm sure people have already commented on this, but WHAT THE FUCK was going on with the characters? Maybe it's too much to expect them to act with borderline professionalism, but most of them didn't behave in any way I recognise as human. Most extreme case in point was the boyfriend character - you've dedicated your life to finding something extraterrestrial, after flying god knows how far into space, you're PROVEN RIGHT, there's alien buildings, reanimated heads, new life forms etc. A couple of hours (!) after first discovering this he's having a drunken sulk because he hasn't found any aliens to talk to yet. Was he expecting one to turn up on their arrival with a 'meaning of life' powerpoint presentation? It was a fuckin relief when he got fried. I kinda felt sorry for the actor - he may have just been a pair of walking cheekbones, but no actor on earth could have done anything with that character. All the good interesting stuff - amazing design, Fassbender, giant man-sized facehugger squids (something I never realised I wanted to see until now), counted for much less 'cos you simply couldn't give a fuck about the characters. The only one that seemed to behave according to basic motivation, or even logic, was the android. Possibly also Charlize Theron. It bugs me because with a few little changes (having your characters behave like human beings would be a start), I think it would have rocked my world. Congratulations Prometheus, you turned me into a whining fanboy.
  10. I quite like this one - I don't agree with it, but I like the image of an ape making me a smoothie.
  11. When I saw this thread title, I immediately thought back to the tortoise/achilles review - the yardstick by which all future pretentious reviews should be measured. Aside from pretentiousness, the other thing I hate in reviews are the writers explaining not only why they don't like it, but how everyone that does like it is in fact pretentious and/or self-deluding. Thank you for your insight sir, I'll throw away all my autechre albums straight away. BTW, 'random beep command' would be a great title for a track. Unfortunately I've yet to find this mystical button on any of the equipment I own.
  12. Seems to have pretty much sold out already! Norman Records still have some apparently.
  13. Bit tricky this - for example, Amber sounds a little dated these days, but when it came out it absolutely changed my life. How do you rate that against something like Untilted? Still, I'll give it a go. As of Feb 2012... Chiastic Slide LP5 Confield Tri Repetae Oversteps Amber Draft 7.30 Untilted Quaristice Incunabula May well change completely next month.
  14. That track sounds pretty damn good....but no f**king way am I going to fork out £25 + postage for two tracks. Even my vinyl fetishism has limits.
  15. Excellent news - the last few Kuedo / Jamie Vex'd releases blew me away so I've got high hopes for this.
  16. Loving this track, reminds me a bit of their old string of pearls remix... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-b_EqHme55Y
