Sweet... was wondering when we were going to be blessed by another Miyazaki creation...

July 19th! Not that far off, either - I bet a US dub will be out by Christmas

shit, that character looks exactly like one my ex-Taiwanese gf would draw. I wish when Miyazake went in "cute mode" his character's heads didn't have to go all soft and squishy and get wide as a truck...

Ah, I thought it was more than that. Even considering it's 9 films over 25 years, there are many other directors that can't even do that. coughquentintarantinocough.

Still quality, though.

Wow, Ponyo was nearly a lethal dose of cuteness. It's gonna take some time for me to process whether this trumps Up for 09. Amazing visuals, natural themes, usual strong female protagonist, important characters of all ages, it's got Miyazaki written all over it. However it's clear this is still a kids movie, aimed at the totoro age, not the mononoke or spirited away age, which in my mind deal with more complex and difficult themes. This means little, as the theater was filled with kids from 7 to non-parents around 35. My only quarrel with the film was the choice of english voice actors. Tina Fey did her job admirably, as did the jonas and cyrus, but both Cate Blanchett and Liam Neeson stuck out as quite poor decisions. To his credit, Neeson was given the clunkiest dialogue, but I had imagined even David Bowie pulling it off with panache (this makes sense once you see the character) Even with the silly plot filler (it's just a kids movie after all), Ponyo was is another creative wonder that everyone has come to expect from Mr. Miyazaki.

beautifully painted water colors, very bright and colorful animation. kinda light on the story, but yeah its aimed at the 5 yr old crowd. i must say it was the happiest natural disaster i've ever seen on film.
